Garmin server giving out wrong 2014.40 maps?

I used Garmin Express to download the latest maps for my new BMW Navigator V and used the option to install on both the device and computer so I can use Basecamp without having the Nav 5 plugged in. This took some doing and in the end I had to put the Nav V into Mass Storage Mode (rather than MTP) for the download and installation to complete properly.

Well Basecamp reported that the downloaded map needed unlocking, but even though my device was registered at MyGarmin and was detected correctly it wouldn't unlock online. I spent 30 minutes speaking with the Garmin Helpline and although they didn't fix the problem they gave me enough info for me to get the map working by hacking the map from the Nav V.

They emailed me a unlock code and a GMA file to unlock the map in Basecamp, but it still wouldn't work. The map in Basecamp actually had a slightly different naming convention and version number (see screenshot) than the one on the Nav V and I think this is why the unlock wasn't working. Anyway I used some software called Gmaptool to convert the gmapprom.img file on the Nav V to a format that Basecamp can read on the PC. I then used the unlock GMA file that Garmin emailed me on this extracted version and it worked. This proved the unlock code I was given was for the map version on the Garmin and not the one on my PC.

It looks like Garmin Express has downloaded two slightly different maps, one for the Nav V and the other for the PC. Should these be identical if they are downloaded using Garmin Express at the same time?

Looking at the maps in detail the differences are shown below:

On the PC - Map ID 3222 City Navigator Europe NT 2014.40 Version 17.40
On the Nav V - Map ID 3223 City Navigator Europe NTU 2014.40 Version 20.14
  • We are looking into this now trying to duplicate it. The issue is the NTU (unicode) maps. The NTU maps are unlocked to the device but it looks like Express installed the non-NTU maps. I will get back to you. For now you can do your planning while the device is connected just select the CN Europe NTU 2014.40 maps in BaseCamp.

  • I seem to have a very similar problem. I used Express to download the Europe map 2014.40 to my 2545LMT and Computer some time ago, but although I (eventually) got the map to the GPS, the computer copy (for BaseCamp) failed, and I gave up as I had used more than my download allowance!

Recently I tried using Express v3.1.7.0 to re-install it on the computer, and again after several restarts (after BSOD on Win7 - very rare!) it eventually completed and said it was ok.

However, BaseCamp claims it is locked, and I have not managed to unlock it (the instructions are VERY biased towards unlocking on the GPS device, but not for the computer!). My Map Product Manager shows 3 maps ...

City Navigator Europe NT 2014.4 Version 17.40 Locked
City Navigator Europe NTU 2014.3 Version 17.30 Unlocked
    Global Version 2.00 Notlockable

I really do NOT want to have to download it yet again - I am one of many people still with boadband speed which many regard as 'slow', and with a download limit!
  • No need to download the map again, you just need the unlock code. Have you tried going to Maps, Manage Maps in Basecamp then selecting the map and clicking the button that says unlock on line?

Oh yes. Tried that. Selected the locked map, clicked Unlock Online. It seemed nothing happened. Tried again. Nothing.

Then I minimised BaseCamp .... and noticed that my Firefox had gained several new tabs for unlocking! Why Garmin give no clues that when they say 'online' they do not mean 'within BaseCamp' but 'in another application' beats me.

So I tried the web page ... plugged my GPS in, clicked Find Devices, selected my device, entered Serial Number (which it could have found!), but came to a full stop when asked for 'Product Key/Coupon Code' as there is no explanation what they should be, as I do not have a 'disc case' for the map!

If I tried 'Retrieve Unlocks' it said 'Successfully unlocked map(s) for device.' but the maps on my device were already unlocked, and it had no effect on the maps in BaseCamp on my computer.

As I said earler: the instructions are VERY biased towards unlocking on the GPS device, but not for the computer!
  • Just the same for me- it's as if the unlock only unlocks maps associated with the device and not the map on the PC. Garmin Support gave me a product code to try for my Nav V but it wasn't recognised.

Hi Garmin/Curt, do you have an update?
  • I tested 3 different TransAtlantic devices (preloaded with Europe and North America), all NTU compatible, to see if Garmin Express would install the non-NTU maps to the computer, to no avail. All three unlocks were for the NTU maps and NTU maps were installed. I suggest you delete the existing Europe maps from the locations below then use the Advanced Option feature in Garmin Express to re install the Europe maps.

Delete existing Europe 2014 maps from all locations:

    • Use Control Panel/Programs and Features to Uninstall the "Garmin City Navigator Europe NT 2014.40"

Delete the files Garmin Express uses to install the maps to the computer. Deleting these will force Garmin Express to download them again. Before testing each device I deleted this folder so Express would have to start from scratch.

    Win 7 & 8

    • Press the Window Key + R
    • Type %programdata%
    • Click OK
    • Open the Garmin folder
    • Open Core Update Service folder
    • Right-click the MAP-EU-2014-40 folder and choose Delete

Also check that Garmin Express is up to date. v3.1.8 was released in the last couple of days and the automatic update feature in Garmin Express is not enabled yet. How do I update Garmin Express?

This is rather incompatible with my original post...

but it looks like Express has wasted lots of my time and my download allowance in downloading the wrong map.

I will probably just not bother until there is the next map release, and just hope that Express has improved by then.
  • I went over my download limit as Garmin Express appears to load two lots of maps, one for the PC and the other the device. I did this four times :( Just waiting for the 1st May when I can try it again.

Hi Curt, I followed your instructions and ensured no maps remained on my PC, but after two failed attempts at downloading I gave up with Garmin Express - I had no errors and there appeared to be a map in the Core Update Service folder, but somehow it was not recognised at all in Basecamp. This happened both times :(

I then switched to using Garmin Mapupdater and it downloaded the correct NTU maps to both the Garmin and PC, but a new map appeared called D2249750A.IMG but this looked just like terrain in Basecamp.

After Googling this I see it's yet another bug, but easily rectified by changing the name to gmapdem. img

For anyone else with problems I finally got to the outcome below which I understand is correct - Garmin Express was a total nightmare but Garmin MapUpdater was the cure.
