Garmin Express backup option

I seem to remember there was an option in Garmin Express to do a backup of the GPS which included .system and gpx folders. Now with version 3.1.7.0 of Garmin Express I can't find this option. Was it removed?
  • Never backed up .system just user data. If you want a full back up you need to do it through Explorer etc.
  • I used to backup through Windows Explorer as well but liked the Express backup better because it was quicker and convenient. So, to get back to my original question, the backup method in Express was taken out?
  • No but it never did a full backup. I would always recommend a full backup via Explorer.

Express can still back up your device data but as SUSSAMB mentioned it does not back up all the devices data. Express does back up the devices favorites and routes. To back up your data see the FAQ:
How do I backup and/or restore my saved addresses, favorites, or routes on my nuvi, zumo, dezl, Camper/RV, or LIVE series device?

When you do a full backup with Explorer, what kind of files and folders would you recommend to be backed up? If I remember correctly, some files are hidden by default, I think gpx is important as well. Anything else?
    Thanks for your help.
  • I back up everything prior to any map or software update, probably not necessary but that's just what I do.

As a minimum if you already have a full backup I'd backup the hidden .system folder (contains your maps) and current.gpx (contains your waypoints etc). Incidentally gupdate.gcd in the .system folder is the file that installs your current software. Worth keeping that since should any future software update cause any issues you can revert to an earlier version by re-installing earlier gupdate.gcd files.
  • All good points. OK, thank you.
