Garmin Express Fails to Install

Former Member
Former Member
I upgraded to the modern Garmin Connect and need Express to upload workouts from my Forerunner 220. Halfway through the initializing phase of the installation it stops and says "Failed.Try again?" it never works.

PC running Vista.

Well, troops, I was having no luck at all getting Garmin Express to install on XP, SP3, that was untill I tried something out of desperation.
My system is set for automatic Windows Updates, but what I found when I performed a manual update using the "Custom" button on the Microsoft Windows Update facility, there were about 16 hardware and software patches available to me that were "optional", and thus had not automatically downloaded. I downloaded the lot, and BINGO! Garmin Express not only install and runs, but makes me my coffee too (not really, I made the last bit up).

    Cannot install Garmin Express

I cannot install Garmin Express 3.2.18.
    Windows 7 64 bit
I am logged in as the administrator and also executed GarminExpress.exe as administrator.

It gets to the point where the following message appears:
"Service Garmin Core Update Service (Garmin Core Update Service) failed to start Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

I next went to Windows services, and attempted to start "Garmin Core Update Service" whereupon the following message appears:
"Windows could not start the Garmin Core Update Service service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

I've also tried setting up a new admin account and attempting an install. Results were the same.

    I've also uninstalled/re-installed .NETFRAMEWORK 4.5.1.

    http://www.garmin.com/en-US/maps/updates/

Go to their official site guys, and download the .exe... I got it off of a different site but it displayed the exact version and everything. Yet, after I re-downloaded from the site above and installed it went through.

Also, go into firewall settings and add the exact file into allowed apps manually. I'm running Windows 8.1 i believe. Since I had the 'install failed try again' error like a lot of you, I'm starting to think it's the .exe files we got that were bad. Might not have anything to do with what version Windows you're running. That's all i'm saying. Doesn't hurt to right click file and 'run as admin' either.

Hope this helps. Don't grill Garmin for this issue. I believe there are some third party sites uploading corrupted .exe files. I know the one I got was corrupt. This isn't Garmin's fault. I guarantee it's something with the .exe and possible IE built-in services. A lot of .exe's use IE to run updates in the background. I'm not an expert with this stuff, but I use trial and error, then IE along with firewall rules or broken .exe's end up being the problems usually.

The System.UnauthorizedAccessException error is generally caused by broken permissions on the folders that the Garmin Core Update Service needs to access. These broken permissions are usually inherited from the parent folders so even if we resolve the problem with Express, you may still experience issues with other applications if you don't fix the permissions with the parent folders. Unfortunately, the Event Viewer logs do not tell us which folders have issues. If you are comfortable reading logs, you can check the most recent log file here:
    C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Logs\CoreService

The most likely place you would have issues with permissions would be:

    C:\ProgramData\Garmin
This folder and all child folders should have the following permissions:
    • System - Full Control
    • Administrators - Full Control
    • Users - Read & execute, List folder contents, Read

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Roaming (You will need to navigate here and accept the prompts to give yourself access to the folder)
This folder and all child folders should have the following permissions:
    • System - Full Control
    • Administrators - Full Control
    • [Your Username] - Full Control (This one doesn't really matter but you should have full control by the time you get to this folder)

If you are unsure how to view/set these permissions or this does not solve the problem, it would be best to contact Product Support by phone.

  • This error occurs due to the Garmin Core Update Service not having sufficient privileges to start. In order to fix the issue, after getting the above error message, click on OK and then click on "Failed? Retry".

Once the installation re-runs, perform the following steps immediately when you see a message that the installation wizard is trying to start the Core Update Service. You need to do this before getting the Failed to Start error.

    1. Go to Start and search for services.msc
    2. Look for Garmin Core Update Service under the list of services and then right click on it and select properties
    3. On the Log On tab, click on "This Account", specify the account name as NTAuthority\Local Service, leave the Password field blank and then click Apply.
    4. Manually start the service by going back to the general tab and trying to start the service.
    5. The Garmin Express Installation would automatically progress and the installation would be a success.

Well for most of the millions that use it it does. Where it doesn't it is almost invariably a problem at the user end, over which Garmin have no control.

Terrific customer service that you keep deflecting blame away from Garmin - tried it on a new Windows 8.1 laptop; also tried it on a Windows 7 64 bit desktop, used all of the suggestions here; nothing works on either; seems like Garmin now has competition from other GPS devices. I'm sure their software will work.

    Thanks for not helping.

Absolutely the biggest hunk of ****** Ive ever been conned into buying. This is the 3rd one I purchased and cant even install the required components. FAILED message every time. I will return this with lesson learned. The lady at Kohls ( where purchased ) said these devices get returned on a daily basis. I guess the year long battery life gives another meaning to the word shelf life because thats exactly where its gonna stay

Please try the suggestions in the FAQ: Why do I receive a "Failed. Try again?" error message when installing Garmin Express on a PC?
