Garmin Express Fails to Install

Former Member

I upgraded to the modern Garmin Connect and need Express to upload workouts from my Forerunner 220. Halfway through the initializing phase of the installation it stops and says "Failed.Try again?" it never works.

PC running Vista.
Help
  • I have nuvi 2340. Have just tried to update but message failed keeps coming up. Done the 4.5 Net update, failed again. Have spent hours and hours trying to get Express up to date. Have uninstalled Express and now it will not reinstall. Fed up to the back teeth. My advice is throw your Garmin away and buy a map.

I assme as you've done the .net update you're on Win XP? Have you also updated the MSI ... http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483

I am running Win 2008 and have tried all of the above. I even managed to get a hold and install successfully an earlier version of Express. It found my fenix2 immediately and wanted to install the latest update. I OK'ed that and sadly Express decided that it needed to update itself. Its runs into the same old error not being able to start the Garmin Core Update Service. I have tried the non-Garmin workaround ... no joy.
When are you going to be releasing a new version of the installer that actually works? In the next few days I hope! This is ridiculous!

Garmin Express v3.2.16.0 automatic update failure
    Vista, Windows 7

I just went through several hours of trial and error to fix this problem on two Windows 7 computers, one 32 bit, one 64 bit. A lot of frustration, including looking at the Garmin Core Update Service status on each (by running services.msc) and finding it "marked for deletion" and Windows refusing to allow any actions to restore it.

I decided to try the update on my Vista computer and it installed with no problems. I had two thoughts: could it be Vista?; could it be that I had just booted the Vista computer? (Of course, could it be Garmin? also sneaked in there, but I sure hoped not.) I tried re-booting the 32 bit Windows 7 computer and running Express and the automatic installation worked normally. On the 64 bit Windows 7 computer, just as a test, I downloaded a copy of v3.2.16.0 from the Garmin site, and it also installed normally. (By the way, I did this with Firefox, not IE, so at least in my case that was not a problem.)

Why the Garmin Core Update Service was disabled is a puzzle. Perhaps the updater, by abending for who-knows-what-conflict in Windows, left it in an unstable state. Why rebooting fixed it is also a puzzle, but stranger things than that often happen in Windows.

That seems like an awfully simple solution, but it worked on both my Windows 7 machines. if the automatic update doesn't work after that, try a fresh download. It is worth a try.......

I too have the Express installation failure problem. I've tried all the solutions I could find but no success.

I'm really at a loss. Any suggestions would be welcome.

    My symptoms and trials
    1) I had Express 3.2.4 ( .4 I think, anyway an earlier version, install file dated 29 June, 2014) working well.
    2) I got the forced upgrade to 3.2.16 which failed with the "retry" button window as described in earlier posts.
    3) I tried the NetFxRepairTool process several times trying to install 3.2.16 without success
    4) msiexec shows I have Windows Installer V 4.5.6002.18005
    5) Tried the Network Services reset but no change.
    6) As an experiment I re-installed the earlier Express version which completed, However it now produces the internet connection block message. I tried the Network Services reset - no joy.
    7) I had this same internet blocked issue with Base Camp a few months ago which the Network Services reset solved. Base Camp continues to work without issues. It will connect to my Nuvi 2455 and read its data.
    8) I can see my Nuvi 2455 as a device in Window Explorer
    9) I can sign onto Garmin's web site MyDashboard using either Chrome or Internet Explorer which identifies my Nuvi as a connected device but refers me to Express for map updates.
    10) Vista Business with all updates current, before my problem with Express 3.2.16
    11) Norton Internet Security with all updates current.

Again, any ideas would be appreciated.

    Regards
    RDL

Have you tried the steps in the sticky https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?101486-Internet-connection-is-being-blocked which appears to resolve most problems.
  • Bought what? Express is free.

What is happening and what error message if any are you getting?

On a new install of Windows 7 64-bit, I installed Garmin Express 3.2.17.0 and got the error that it can't find the device. So I tried changing the Garmin Service as noted above, with no success. Finally, I uninstalled 3.2.17.0 and re-installed 3.2.16.0, which worked before. However, even that now fails with the message noted above.

Fortunately, with a trip coming up, I have my TomTom Go720.

(By the way, I see that both Firefox and Internet Explorer download 3.2.16.0 now. If you had done that earlier, it might still be working.)

Hi, tought i'd share my experience with garmin express (not a very good one).
I had problems installing Garmin Express in Windows 8.0 getting the "Failed. Try Again?" error (what error code is that?), after reading this thread and many other I found a solution for me:
    1. I NEEDED to download the software using Internet Explorer (was using Chrome) or the installer won't even start the download process after agreeing terms and conditions (don't understand why)
    2. I needed to use this solution to get the Service running after the first time I got installation stuck in the middle of the process
    3. Lastly I went in Control Panel, clicked on Uninstall Programs, clicked on Turn Windows features on or off and disabled the .NET Framework 4.5 Advanced Services

And i finally got the software installed. Since I'm a developer myself I could get around with the installation in "just one hour" but I can easly say this was the most unfriendly and complicated software installation I've ever experienced in many years of computer heavy usage.

Hope this can help someone else stuck in this limbo ;)

I am completely frustrated. Garmin express downloaded but keeps telling me it needs to close to apply update then I get an error message. I download whatever Microsoft tool and nothing changed!! Starting to think I should have stuck with NIKE Plus
