I upgraded to the modern Garmin Connect and need Express to upload workouts from my Forerunner 220. Halfway through the initializing phase of the installation it stops and says "Failed.Try again?" it never works.

PC running Vista.

i am not changing my computer nor the system to vista...

I have Garmin Express 3.2.7 working just fine in a WinXP SP3 virtual machine (VM).

PS: I should clarify my meaning of "just fine". I mean it installed and functions. That said it seems just as buggy as ever. I don't use GE to actually do anything unless absolutely necessary.
  • well it should not be done with a forced update.... i am not changing my computer

I suspect as well just like with Basecamp Garmin will leave a version of Express for those still using XP, but more and more program are incompatible with XP ... time marches on :)

I am also having the same issue-and yes, I know my version of windows is not supported, but the forced update is definitely creating an issue.

Am trying to re-install the installer now...

    **UPDATE**
I had already run the .Net thing, and then I tried the installer. After a quick reboot, I tried again with the Garmin Express update, and it was just sitting there at 45-50%. I'm thinking, it's going to fail again, but to my happy surprise: It worked!

Still, I'd have to say it was a little scary for a sec there. It would certainly be cool if I could've at least finished some basic setups on my brand new device before being forced to run further updates. Sure, the updates are important, but if these devices were able to function okay without them, I'm sure a few days more couldn't hurt!

Good luck to the rest of you!

It is clear that Garmin Express 3.2.7 will not install on Windows XP SP3 machines (well my one at least). Any workarounds?
  • It's meant to be compatible as far as I know ... have you checked Windows Installer is up to date http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483

Its all pretty simple and wrong on Garmin's part! There installer kit is missing Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable. Garmin's express's error message is ridiculous. Garmin, like all other good SW vendors should upgrade the pc with the required Microsoft software or inform us to do it ourselves. It takes 3 minutes plus a reboot and is simple. It is a 3.2Meg file!! Common Garmin wake up? It makes you look ridiculous.

I called Garmin support and they told me I was SOL and XP is no longer supported and that I would never be able to use Garmin express again for downloads or uploading activities.

Do it yourself... It is fast and easy!! Yes, I am running the "unsupported" XP SP3 and Garmin express 3.2.7.0 is running as it did in the past.

  • It's already been posted here that 3.2.7 will work with XP provided the Windows Installer was updated. Whoever you spoke to at support got it wrong.

That's what I thought until I ran the Windows Installer update - did that and then successfully ran the GE update on my aging PC running on unsupported XPsp3

I was having all of the above problems on my XP machine and tried the two solutions previously mentioned. I then checked the Microsoft website where apparently there are some new updates to the .net framework AFTER the end of life updates. After installing those, I was able to download and install the latest Express. Given all of the problems I have had with buggy Garmin software, I don't want to install it on my Win7 machine. So for now it is still working on the XP box.
  • Express works fine on both my Win7 machines, I'd go ahead if I were you.
