Strava, MapMyRun no longer import new activities

I upload activities from my 910XT to Garmin Connect, Strava, MapMyRun. I switched from ANT Agent to Garmin Express yesterday, and now Strava and MMR no longer see new activities; they find the device, but only older activities show up.

What do I need to do to regain function with these other programs?

Thanks,

DW
  • Those third party sites are likely still trying to read the information from ANT Agent's backup directory. To manually locate the files sent through Express, see this FAQ:
Why are my activities files not being stored on my computer once I have uploaded them to Garmin Connect using Garmin Express?

And about the weight data from Tanita/910xt where are located?
  • The Weight data does not get backed up to this folder after uploading to Connect. As many browsers are starting to eliminate plugins, Garmin has decided to no longer support the Communicator Plugin (CPI). Due to this change, ANT devices no longer can send data to third party websites using the CPI. The CPI will still work with ANT Agent and mass storage devices as long as the browser supports it, but Garmin Connect 2.0 (Modern) will only work with Garmin Express.

Due to this change, Garmin will be working directly with third party websites and applications that enhance our user experiences. We are limiting our developer scope to strengthen strategic partnerships.

Looking at the list of apps you support -none of them I have ever heard of - I hope you will immediately start a strategic partnership with Strava - the only app I use to track my workouts and my progress.

  • I was about to buy an Edge 1000 but having read the above post by EXPRESSCUSTOMERCARE I think I will wait until it becomes clearer exactly what Garmin's strategy is for data transfer going forward. My worry is that they are trying to discourage users of Garmin devices from easily using their data in their web site/software of choice. This is even less defensible given the state garmin connect is currently in. I have tried to use it but gave up after 3 days and went back to using Strava.

A increasingly frustrated long term (first device in 2000 - several since) Garmin user.

I have just bought a Garmin 910XT and have been trying to get it transferred over to MapMyRun with no luck. So I am assuming that this can't be done at the moment then?
Someone else I know has the same watch and is able to do it though

Huw I've got the same problem on a Garmin 610 but found a workaround. Export the data from your session as a TCX file and then use the import file feature in Mapmyrun and select the exported file. The same issue arises on the Runtastic site. I suppose it is too much to expect Garmin to have all these problems sorted BEFORE releasing the upgrade!!!

Thank you Starfighter1948. The export then import TCX file works for Mapmyrun and Strava also.
    Appalling behaviour by Garmin.
  • Interesting comment. Why is the fact that some Garmin programs won't work with every third party program 'appalling behaviour by Garmin'?

Whatever program you're running from whatever vendor you can't guarantee nor expect it to simply work with any third party program you use. I use various programs that require 'work arounds' from various vendors and am always grateful that at least there is a 'work around' :)
  • I've got to agree with SUSSAMB here. The reason this stops working is that Garmin Express stores files in a different place from ANT+ Agent. I don't know about Windows, but Apple has guidelines (which I think become requirements if you want your app in the OS X App Store) telling you where a program should store its files that it wants to keep hidden from users. ANT+ Agent and Express are two separate programs, so they store their files in different places. Strava looks at the old place (which strictly speaking, they shouldn't do, but I understand completely why they do it), and doesn't see the new files. So Garmin's programmers follow the rules and break third party hacks they had nothing to do with. And you're not mad at Strava for some reason, but Garmin.

    This thread contains the solution.

Added: OK, now I realize that this is due to Communicator Plugin not looking in the new place, since I signed up for Strava last week and it used Communicator Plugin for the first upload. But they announced they weren't going to develop Communicator Plugin any more. So, Garmin's fault, but they warned about it.
