Update install failed, service would not start

Hi

I was running Garmin Express to update my Nuvi when an update was offered, I accepted the update and it went to install,
after about half the install an error box came up, saying that the Garmin Core Update service failed to start (see attached)
and mentioned privileges, as I am the only user I must have full privileges.

I look in "Services" and there is no Garmin Core Update Service there.

I tried downloading and installing the latest install file but got the same error.

Garmin Express will not open, and if I click on the exe at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Express\Express.exe" it shows the same error

Where do I go from here.

BTW, I have Windows 8.1 fully updated

Cheers

Daniel
  • Okay, that didn't work, still the same error.

I guess there is an issue with Windows 8.1

Garmin Express is fully compatible with Windows 8.1. It appears there is something going on with either the .NET Framework or the (UAC) User Account Controls. Unfortunately at this point I can only suggest you use another computer, possibly a friend or family member who's computer you can use to install Garmin Express.

  • Hi

I have installed Garmin Express on a virtual drive using XP as the OS, I noticed that after the initial unpack, Garmin Express
communicates with the Garmin site, this seems to be the point where the install fails.

Perhaps I need to modify the Windows 8.1 firewall to allow the communication, but I do not know the sites to allow.

    Can you help with that?

    Cheers

  • Generally modifications to the Windows Firewall are not needed for Garmin Express. I suggest you add Garmin Express to the list of allowed programs if you feel it is being blocked. That should allow access to the Garmin servers.

  • Hi

I formatted, again, and reinstalled and updated Win8.1 and after changing a whole lot of permissions I have managed to get
    Garmin Express to work.

Thanks for your help and support

    Regards

I fix the problem when uninstall .net 4.5 from the programs in control panel. Seems that the garmin express is not compatible with .net 4.5 version.

When the program finish the installation, it install .net 4.0 profile that is required by the software to work.

I checked my event log and it the system was complaining about a missing file Microsoft.VC90.CRT with a side-by-side error. This is caused by the Visual C++ redistributable. Consequently I downloaded the 2008 VC++ redistributable from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29. This fixed the missing DLL problem and the install completed successfully.
