Update install failed, service would not start

Hi

I was running Garmin Express to update my Nuvi when an update was offered, I accepted the update and it went to install,
after about half the install an error box came up, saying that the Garmin Core Update service failed to start (see attached)
and mentioned privileges, as I am the only user I must have full privileges.

I look in "Services" and there is no Garmin Core Update Service there.

I tried downloading and installing the latest install file but got the same error.

Garmin Express will not open, and if I click on the exe at "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Express\Express.exe" it shows the same error

Where do I go from here.

BTW, I have Windows 8.1 fully updated

Cheers

  • Hi

    I tried this:helps http://windowsperformance.blogspot.c...of-garmin.html

But I got an error saying no such account and invalid password.

    Thanks

  • Hi

does anyone know if the "Garmin Core Update Service" is dependent on another Service to be running?

    Thanks

    Daniel
  • Daniel,

The Garmin Core Update Service is dependent on Microsoft .NET Framework. It sounds like the latest version of Garmin Express is having difficulty installing over a previous version and there may be some Microsoft .NET Framework issues. I suggest you uninstall Garmin Express. Try to uninstall it from the Control Panel\Programs and Features first. If you get any error messages use the instructions for Garmin Express toward the bottom of this FAQ. In the Microsoft Fixit application, choose "Detect problem and let me select the fixes to apply" then "Uninstalling".

Once you have Garmin Express uninstalled run the Microsoft .NET Repair Tool v1.2 from this FAQ which should correct any .NET Framework issues.

Finally, install the latest version of Garmin Express from here.

  • Hi

while trying to follow the process here (from a post above)
    http://windowsperformance.blogspot.c...of-garmin.html

Garmin express was uninstalled, the folder remained but there was no exe file.

I tried to re-install it from the Garminexpressinstaller.exe in the link you gave me,

The Mrfixit did not show Garmin Express as an option in the Install trouble shooting list
it did find other Garmin installs including Garmin Tray, which is not shown in Programs and features but
is showing in my notification area.

I then ran the .net check and went through the process which include a couple of attempts to reinstall
    Garmin Express but nothing worked.

Is there something I have missed?

    Thanks

Daniel - The article at the windowsperformance.blogspot you refer to was not created by Garmin and I have no indication that it has worked for anyone. I can only comment on the instructions I provided. In the Microsoft Fixit Utility you should be selecting the Uninstall option instead of Install. Choose "Detect problem and let me select the fixes to apply",, then "Uninstalling"

    In the list look for:

    • Garmin Express
    • Garmin Express Tray
    • Elevated Installer
    • Garmin Update Services (skip if not present)

Select any or all of the above to remove them. The focus would be to remove anything that is related to the earlier Garmin Express version before trying to install the latest version. Restart the computer then try to install Garmin Express again. If you continue to have trouble then another computer will have to be used.

  • Hi

the only program I had on the list was Garmin Express tray, MrFixit uninstalled that okay and ran repairs.

There are other Garmin programs showing but not
    •Garmin Express
    •Elevated Installer
•Garmin Update Services (skip if not present)

Should I uninstall the other Garmin programs I have?

    Thanks

  • DANIELLOUWRENS - At this point I would suggest the following FAQ for this issue: What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client?
If your issue persists we recommend calling Australia Customer Support for further troubleshooting of your particular issue.

  • Hi Shane

thanks for your help, I am going to reinstall my OS and see how that fixes things, I am due for a clean out anyway.

  • Okay, that didn't work, still the same error.

I guess there is an issue with Windows 8.1
