Garmin Express is compatible with almost all Garmin units. If the device is not compatible with Express, a message will appear stating this fact. The Montana series is compatible with Express.
It would be better (for the user not wasting time and bandwidth, for Garmin not having to provide the bandwidth for the downloads) if that info was provided up front though - before downloading GarminExpress Installer and it then further downloading Express, Dotnet Framework, etc.

With respect, I have a 478, a 376C and a 2730 that are all incompatible with Garmin Express. I have purchased lifetime maps for these units and am now unable to update them. So I challenge the assertion that GE is compatible with 'almost all' units. If Garmin made a current unit that does what the 478 does, I would by happy to upgrade. That is why 478s go for more on e-by than they cost new.
