Nuvi 50LM - Language update problem

Former Member

Wondering if someone could help me on this as I could not find a answer anywhere. I just updated my Nuvi50LM using the Garmin Express Software. After it was done I now have only one language to choose from in settings (Francais Canadien). I have all the languages for Text, and Keyboard but only have one to choose from for Voice. I have done a master system reset and that did not change anything.

So how do I get the Voice Language to American English when it does not give me that option?

Thanks

Don
  • Seems like another Express gremlin ... run WebUpdater and that should reload them :)

It's also possible the OP has a corrupted \Garmin\GarminDevice.xml file. Deleting the file and rebooting may correct that.
  • I didn't think that info was in the xml file ... but that's your territory and not mine :)

Yup--it is :D The XML file contains details of all updateable files on the unit. GE/WebUpdater/etc look at that file to determine what files have updates. If the files aren't in the XML (because it's corrupted) they won't be offered.
  • Got that, but the OP was asking about choosing files on the GPS, as GE seems to have deleted some. A corrupted xml file (if I get you correctly) would prevent GE from offering to update them, but shouldn't result in GE deleting them in the first place ... or would it?

Not sure what the OP updated with GE but it sounds like filesystem corruption on his 50LM. The 50LM may not have been "safely removed" (people do that all the time). That could result in missing voice (and other files) and/or a corrupted/missing GarminDevice.xml.

Now the OP can get the files back with GE/WebUpdater (i.e. reload them) but I got the impression, perhaps incorrectly, that they weren't being offered.

I have all the languages for Text, and Keyboard but only have one to choose from for Voice.
  • You're in a thread nearly a year old. There were some issues with earlier versions of Express deleting voice files but I've updated numerous units now with no problem. Can you confirm that you're running the latest version of Express, v3.0.9?
  • The latest version of Express (3.0.9) has corrected this issue. Please refer to the following FAQ for replacing voice files.
Why are there missing or corrupt voice files on my nuvi, dezl, RV, Camper, LIVE or zumo?
