Unable to update nuvi 3590LM because of internal storage

I'm trying to update my nuvi 3590LM because the road maps are out of date, I downloaded Garmin Express and connected my device to my computer and it says the there is not enough internal storage for the update. The internal storage on the garmin is at about 7.8GB out of 8GB, but I have a 16GB SD card in the device that is completely empty, I have formatted the SD Card, is there any reason why the program cannot download the update to the SD card?

    You say you have formatted the card but don't specify what format. It has to be formatted as FAT32. If it's any other format, the card will not be seen. If you've already formatted it as FAT32 and it's not being recognized, you could try the official SD Card formatting utility available for download at the following link:

    Make sure the device is in Mass Storage mode by doing the following.

    1.  Start device (disconnected) go to the volume control screen.
    2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for about 10 seconds.
    3. The Developers Screen should pop up.  If you see Configuration and Settings, select that option.
    4. Scroll down to MTP settings.
    5. Change from Auto Detect to Mass Storage
    6. Shut down the device and connect to PC
    7. Open Garmin Express and retest.
