Is there a new procedure to do a Factory Data Reset on BWW Nav 6 with the new screen?

I have my 3rd BMW Nav 6 that has been replaced under warranty (Thank You Garmin!) It works much better but I have a problem doing a factory data reset via the old way of pressing and holding the right lower corner when booting the device to access the reset screen/menu... Is there a new procedure?

  • According to the Garmin website, the procedure is as follows:

To Perform a Master Reset on a BMW Motorrad Navigator V/VI Device:

    1. Start with the device off and unplugged from power
      • To verify the device is powered off and not in standby mode, touch and hold down the power button until prompted to turn off the device
    2. Touch and hold the lower right hand corner of the display portion of the touchscreen
    3. Power on the device
    4. "System" will appear on the screen for approximately 30 seconds
    5. Remove your finger when the screen displays "Loading..."
  • This is the standard procedure that has always worked for me but for some reason it does not want to work with the new updated screen,

  • Can you provide a screenshot or video of what is going on when you are trying to reset?

  • Well, it pretty much boots as normal as if were turning it on to use.
I put my finger on the bottom right of the screen and hold it them power up and the unit boots up as if for normal use.
My older Nav 6 with the TFT screen I could boot into "Factory Data Reset" with no problem... I think there must be something different with the newer screen which is capacitive screen.

I was sent this email from Garmin when the warrantied my Nav6 for the second time.
The screen definitely reacts differently to touch.

    Hello Wayne,

With the revised version of the BMW Motorrad Navigator VI you will see a different response when interacting with the touchscreen. A different, newer touchscreen technology is used in the revised version.

The change in response is what allows the newer touchscreen to remain glove friendly for riding and withstand the various elements it may be exposed to when riding. We recommend putting the Navigator on your motorcycle mount and interacting with it wearing gloves as if you were on a ride. You will see improved functionality when doing so.

Some of the changes in response may present themselves as:

    • Delayed reaction to touch
    • Increased sensitivity to touch or finger contact
    • Duplicate responses on the keyboard when touched
    • Misalignment of icons, letters, or numbers

These will appear in various ways, at various times, and with various frequency based off how your specific finger is interacting with touchscreen when not wearing gloves and without the Navigator on the motorcycle mount.

We do have a few tips for a better experience when interacting with the touchscreen:

    • When you press an icon or key on the screen make sure you are pressing directly on the intended key or icon
    • Pull your finger completely away from the screen after touching your intended icon or key
    • Do not immediately press a key again if you do not see an immediate response; allow a few seconds for the touch interaction to process
    • Utilize the “Large Buttons” Keyboard Layout rather than QWERTY or ABCDE (this can be changed in the Keyboard Settings)
    • Enable “Mode-Adaptive Keyboard” in the Keyboard Settings
    Thank you for choosing Garmin,

  • OK...
I figured it out... I don't know if it's me but apparently you cannot touch the frame of the unit with your hand at the same time you are touching the lower RH corner to get it to boot into Factory Data Reset...

I set the Nav on my desk with the power button hanging over the edge of the desk. I put my finger on the bottom right of the screen without touching the frame of the Nav or anything else. I reached under the Nav where the power button was hanging over and pushed the button.

The "Make Life a Ride" splash screen came up and I held my finger on the lower right corner then the "loading maps" wording came up but when I took my finger off of the lower right of the screen the screen came up asking if I wanted to clear all user data... I answered yes and then was promoted to enter my location and language as if the unit was new.
Once it fully booted I looked for the GPX file that I was having problems deleting and it was gone!

  • Not working for me.  But I do see an option when you press "device" then the 3-bars on upper left to erase user data and/or restore (2-options)  Do you have that?  Wondering if one of those is the new way for master reset?

  • I don't know and I have a trip coming up this weekend and my routes are loaded and working correctly... I think now might not be the time to experiment!
I will note this for the next time!
