Drivesmart55 update in GarminExpress

I'm a Linux guy, so I run the Garmin Express in a VirtualBox session, Windows 10 inside.

Now this has been successfull in updating my old nuvi 1490, but also a newer Drivesmart 60. I replaced 1490 with Drivesmart 55, but I cannot get it recognized within virtual Windows. It just wants to be the MTP device and not Mass Storage like the older devices. Now, I went to the configuration menu, and the MTP mode does not offer mass storage settings anymore, just this thing called "ethernet" and "ethernet single session." Is there any way to make the 55 behave as Mass Storage?

I also want to use Windows basecamp to get the settings from 1490 to 55, not just map updates, but I am stuck.

Cheers, Martin

  • The Drivesmart 55 is a newer model than the Drivesmart 60. It doesn't support mass storage mode anymore, and there is nothing you can do to change that...

  • Oh well. Development/Progess may not be everyone's improvement... Nevertheless, provided that I get data from the old Garmin via Win Basecamp, will I be able to import them to the new Garmin via Android Basecamp? Having a real Windows machine is a no go for me...

  • Can you access the Drivesmart 55 with the Linux file explorer? If that is possible, you don't need BaseCamp to transfer your waypoints.

The waypoints are stored in the file /GPX/Current.gpx or /Garmin/GPX/Current.gpx on your nüvi 1490. Copy it to the folder /GPX on your Drivesmart 55 and rename it to temp.gpx.

BTW: there is no Garmin BaseCamp for Android, only for Windows and MacOS.

  • Ah all right. Maybe I got some irrelevant search results on Android Basecamp, which I didn't pursue further. Glad to know for sure there's none.

Allright, I am already aware of the GPX files from saving the old Garmin before a reset to factory settings. So if that file is content-compatible (I vaguely remember it's xml) and all that's needed is the transfer to the new device, all the better.

At this moment I cannot mount the device on my Linux, troubleshooting as to why, because some other MTP-compatible devices  work quite well.

I guess the only option to update maps in the 55 now is the wifi, right?

  • The file is content-compatible and yes, it's xml.

The maps can be updated with Garmin Express or via Wifi. For Express you need Windows or MacOS, so your only option is Wifi.

  • Okay, thanks.

Well, this is the third time I asked with Garmin product problems on this forum and although I didn't always get the answers that would please me, they were quick and (unfortunately sometimes :-)) always matched my situation and useful.

Keep up the good work in 2026.
