How do I install a purchased topographic map to my eTrex Vista HCx using Map Install? My device isn't compatible with Garmin Express.

I would like to purchase the TopoActive North America map to install on my eTrex Vista, but there is a disclaimer on the product page that Garmin Express - which does not work with my device - is required to do so. Why are there seemingly no topo maps available that can be installed via Map Installer, or even Base Camp 2D, which does work with the eTrex Vista HCx? Am I missing something?

  • You probably need to look at 3rd party maps, there are many available for Garmin handheld devices. Your device was discontinued many years ago.

  • Hello@All, as  newcomer to this forum I can't understand Garmin's intention doing so, by meaning of refusing support to customers with older devices! I would name it Microsofts behavior of turbocapitalism! But, I'm around here with my true trip compagnion edge 500, which is accepted by older expresses, 3.2.6 matches to me. But, on the other hand, no updates are available, and so I have to face a luxury tempometer. Did anybody try hacking older devices, like flashing a 500, and installing 510 software, f. e.? Or installing open sourcecode software, or maps? I don't accept the only one possibility of buying a new device, with trashing the older one!

  • The eTrex Vista HCx came out in June 2007; 18 years ago.  You can't expect these devices to be supported forever!

  • Don't nail me, but I'm doing so, really! And I'm favorizing circular economy. At least we are bikers, with a great sense for our environmental problems. What hinders Garmin from supporting it with leaving running systems right on start? I'm pretty sure their corporate identity will lead -

  • There are many maps based on Openstreetmap available:  https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download
You can install them on your eTrex Vista, most of them are free.

I can synchronize my Edge 500 with the latest Express, don't need an old version for that.

Installing firmware for other models is not possible and nobody tried to create open source firmware...

  • Hi, you don't use Win 7, I presume? Otherwise I don't understand my own Devices behavior. There are no maps on it, and I'm wondering about the fact that the device's store is 53, 6 MB only. How many maps can be stored there?

    Thanks in advance, Peter

  • You can’t put maps on the Edge 500, it doesn’t support maps at all.
    And no, I don’t use Windows 7.

  • Thank you answering, and especially for this Wiki excursion.

So, if my 500 don't support maps, what are the meanings of Satelliten search in the beginning of it's booting sequence?

As a pure speedo there's no need for this, because of sensors, speed and cadence, which I wasn't able to show up. Coming as a gift with that frameset I bought recently, I presume the preowner's intention of deleting personell data he killed mainparts of it's firmware.

So, is there a way of fixing it, with my possibilities, like so. sent it and I flash the device, before reinstalling this nos ?

  • It uses GPS to track your activities, so you can review it later in Connect. It also uses GPS to calculate distances (horizontal and vertical), and determine your speed if you don't have a speed sensor. You can also use it for navigation with a course, a bit rudimental though without a map.

  • Hello, thank you for responding once more! Before I will give it up making it running like new, let me ask you one last question: how would you give an explaination for this circumstance of being not recognized in older versions of G-connect/explorer, by means of finding no device number?

At least there will be need for a special installation of Windows 10 on a ssd partition for making it easier handling it, isn't it?
