No maps available after update.

Yesterday I updated my nuvi 58 LMT using Garmin Express. Powering up the device took much longer than usual and I got the message "No details maps were found..." followed by "Cannot unlock maps".

I've tried reinstalling maps several times. It rapidly reaches 50% and the progress bar then increases much more slowly taking several minutes. Everything seems to progress and there are no error messages. Maps show correctly as UK & Ireland 2026.20 in Garmin Express. Once I power up the device I get the same error messages.

Only oddity is I see "CN Europe NTU" in myMaps. Nothing else in the list. Tried "changing" to UK & Ireland in Garmin Express and reinstalling and same problems.

The "nuvi" device that appears in windows lists 5.55GB free of 7.16GB in internal storage. The "Map" folder only has a bunch of small .gma and .unl files in it.

I tried adding a 32GB SD card which shows up fine as a memory card but no data is being written to it and no option is ever showing in Garmin Express to use it.

It looks like Garmin Express is trying to reinstall maps and then silently failing while still reporting everything is OK.

Any ideas?

  • I don't know anything about that nuvi 58 LMT or what could be happening with the map failure but I do know that Garmin requires the SD card be formatted as FAT32.  If you purchased it new and just stuck it in the device it is likely exFAT formatted which the nuvi won't recognize.  If you aren't familiar with this, do a little research because just reformatting it will likely default to exFAT.

  • It's FAT32.

I've done some further testing and seen that the nuvi 58 has a hidden (and normally invisible) .System folder and data is being written in there when Garmin Express reinstalls maps. At the very first step of reinstalling maps it says "activating maps".

I've done quite a bit of research most of which unfortunately implies it's a brick now.

The ancient JaVaWa device manager can recognise it with some persuasion. It reported one error due to a map being in the wrong place but that's fixed now.

Update: Garmin support just read from a script and gave me stock answers finally offering me a discount on another device.

This is very annoying because it's almost certain that a corrupted file or misconfiguration is causing this problem which should be fixable.

In case this helps anyone else: during my reseearch I found that you can change it from MTP to a mass storage device using a hidden menu. That device then includes the full filesystem including the hidden .System directory which you can't see over MTP. If I'd known about that before it was corrupted I'd have performed a full backup and a restore might well have fixed this.
