Garmin Nuvi 2585 - Garmin Express can not see SD Card - No card found

Hi,

I am old owner of Garmin Nuvi 2585. Not a single problem until now. Current Map

version 2026.20 (Europa) require SD Card. Over PC and laptop I can see SD card on Nuwi 2585

but latest Garmin Express can not. Garmin Express is up to date. SD card is within the size limits

(I have try 16GB and 32GB cards). Card is inserted correct into the Garmin device because I can see sign SD on Nuwi 2585.

I can play music from SD card on 2585. I have connected PC/laptop over single USB cable to Nuwi 2585 and can see both Drive.

I have try different USB port on the PC and laptop, no difference. Even format SD card to FAT32 over NOT Quick format.

I have try 3 different SD card, does not help. Try to run Garmin Express as an Admin, no help, my Profile is as an Admin.

Have to try on PC/ Laptop, no change.  I have read simular problems but I could not found solutions.

Please, can somebody give me an idea, advice, maybe Garmin support, I have no more idea.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

thank you for reply and good will.

Link to FAQ does not offer something new, I have already answer all those questions in my previous post (except with number steps). I can see lot's of same problems related to this. I am glad that I am not only one but it is no comfort.

It seems that everything is working (Nuwi 2585 can see SD card, I can send files from PC/laptop to Nuwi 2585, Nuwi 2585 can see files, play songs)  except Garmin Express.

    What else to try?

Ensure Garmin Express is up to date -> yes

Confirm the GPS device supports this process by reviewing -> Yes (Class 2 to 10 up to 32GB) - PC can see over nuwi 2585

Make sure the SD card is within the size limits and has enough space. -> Yes (Class 2 to 10 up to 32GB) - PC can see over nuwi 2585

Make sure the SD card is fully inserted. Some devices have a spring-loaded slot that will click softly when the card is in far enough. Garmin Express will not work with a separate card reader. -> Proof is that Nuwi 2585 has sign SD Card an PC can see it as well

Make sure the USB cable is plugged directly into the device and the computer -> Of course, using original cabel and try some other

Unplug all USB devices (except for the mouse and keyboard), reboot the computer, and connect again -> No difference

Try a different USB port on the computer -> No difference

Format the memory card -> 3 cards 16 and 32 GB to FAT32 no difference

Try using a different SD card -> 3 cards 16 and 32 GB no difference

Run Garmin Express on a different computer -> PC and Laptop no difference

    What else to try?

  • I think your device connects in mtp mode, try changing it to mass storage mode and see if that helps ...

    1. Ensure the Nuvi is not connected to your computer. Power on the Nuvi.
    2. Navigate to the volume screen. This is usually accessed by pressing the "Volume" button or by going to the main menu and selecting "Volume".
    3. Access the developer settings. Press and hold the upper right corner of the screen for approximately 10 seconds. A diagnostic or developer menu should appear.
    4. Change the USB mode. Locate and select "MTP Settings" or "USB Mode". Change the setting from "Auto Detect" or "Garmin" to "Mass Storage".
    5. Save the changes. Some devices may require you to confirm or save the new setting.
    6. Connect to your computer. Plug the Nuvi into your computer using a USB cable. The device should now be recognized as a mass storage device by your computer, allowing you to access its files.
  • Hello,

thank you very much for your effort and time.

I have stuck on the step 4. I can not find "MTP Settings" or "USB Mode". I can see following options on Diagnostic page: 1. Clear all user data,  2. Shutdown Causes, 3. Developer Info, 4. Developer Tests, 5. Diagnostic Logging, 6. Demo Mode, 7. Developer GPS Tools, 8. Touch Screen Calibration, 9. Bluetooth Address, 10. Hardware version, 11. Dev. Tools, 12. Delete Protected NVM Tags.

    Does something missing?

  • Sorry yours is a rather rare device which I have no experience with so if that option doesn't exist and the FAQ doesn't help then you'll need to contact Product Support for further help.

  • Hi!

Well, that is a problem, after all I really do belive there is a solution on higher level (from Garmin factory tehnical support).

I have already contact Garmin Product Support and I have receive following answer from local dealer and representative in my country:

    "Greetings,

the memory of your navigation is not large enough to update the map.
You need to buy a MicroSD memory card up to 32GB and update the maps again. The card is not produced by Garmin, so we do not offer it as such,
it is best to buy it in one of the technical goods stores. We are at your disposal for any additional questions.
    With respect"

It is very basic, to simple and general answer. I have visited local dealer and representative in my country and after 10-15 minutes of Diagnostic receive answer from tehnician that he can not see SD Card also on Nuvi 2585 and that is probably to old device.

I really do not accept that answer because Garmin Nuvi 2585 is still supported with software upgrade and Lifetime map, if helps I can write its S/N. So far so good until latest map upgrade problem. What is worse I can not see my own country now.

Is there any E-mail adress or way to contact Garmin product Support from Garmin factory or their tehnical support?

How to contact higher level of support?

  • Devices do occasionally fail as they get older, just like any electronic devices, so if your local dealer cannot get it to work either then it's likely that. You could try here https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?contactOverride=true&productID=94368&tab=topics

    or email [email protected]

  • Well, it is possible but all relevant indicators shows that it is not a Hardware problem what is important, it is in a software or settings. SD card is seen and usable by Nuvi 2585 and available over PC (Win 10) and Laptop (Win10) connected to Nuwi 2585. It looks like a bug to me. It is probably not in settings because I can not find one in Nuwi 2585, also Diagnostic page has no relevant settings for Mass storage or USB. I guess there is a service mode but that information has only Garmin staff. It is probably nothing serious but right people know. Garmin has nothing to loose and I have a lot to gain, operational and functional device. I am really sorry that also other Garmin staff are not interact here.

  • This is mainly a user to user forum, but you can try the email I quoted as I've always had help from there.

  • I really hope that they (Garmin) are reading this conversation because I have finally manage to put Full Coverage of Europa (or Map version 2026.20 (Europa) not just on NUVI 2585 but also even on SD card over "workaround" solution.

    And that is following step:

If an updated region has been installed to the device

    on

    support.garmin.com/.../

I did have previously updated map Southern Europe on NUVi 2585 because it is the closest map to me but without my country (because Garmin Express could not see SD card on NUVI 2585 and let me to install Full map of EU)

I have Run application "Garmin Express"

So, I have click on "Install to Computer" and wait until it was finish.

After, I have Run application "MapInstall".

During the MapInstall  I have selected "Nuvi 2585 + SD Card"

and Full Coverage of Europa (because Southern Europe was visible and selected allready).

After 45 minutes averything was installed on NUVI 2585 + SD Card.

Conclusion, it is NOT problem in "old" Nuvi 2585. Problem is a bug in Garmin Express.

Problem is also in local tehnical support.

I am solving problems profesionally over 25 years on Servers and Mainframes so this is not

suprising to me, more like another challenge.
