Garmin Nuvi 2585 - USB driver fails to work in Windows 10

Hi,

I am trying to update my Garmin Nuvi 2585, which Windows 10 used to connect to just fine.  I have not connected to it for many months but I just found that the "Garmin USB GPS" driver in the Device Manager indicates no driver is installed.  I installed the latest USB drivers (v2.3.1.2) from the Garmin website but the installation has had no effect on successfully loading the Garmin USB driver.  I have a 1GB SD card (FAT32) installed in the 2585 and I reformatted it both ExFAT and NTFS to see if this would allow the Garmin USB driver to "enable" but there is still no improvement.

When I connect my 2585 to my Windows 10 laptop, I can get Garmin Express (v7.25.0 + a13e85b4) to show "Connected" only when "Mass Storage" is selected on the 2585.  However, as the USB driver is not working, the "Charging Only" no longer allows Garmin Express to connect to the 2585.  I am not sure if this matters, but I thought I had better mention it in case I will not be able to update the 2585 map with Base Camp, which I have not tried yet.

Can anyone offer any advice at to what I can do to the Garmin USB driver working again?

Thanks!

Adam

  • You don't need the Garmin USB drivers, those are made for old devices like the GPSMAP 60CSx for a specific protocol that your nüvi doesn't use at all.
Also, your nüvi cannot handle SD cards formatted with ExFAT of NTFS, only FAT32 is allowed.

You wrote it does work when you select "Mass Storage". That is the correct protocol.

  • Confirm the size of the SD card; you say “I have a 1GB SD card…”.  Most Garmin devices are 32GB max and about 4GB minimum.  I would be recommending 16GB or 32GB with memory being inexpensive.

  • Thank you very much for your reply and advice.  I did think that perhaps I had it around the wrong way in that it was the Mass Storage option that allowed Win10 to connect to the 2585.  Except that I noticed last night that Garmin are no longer releasing NT maps after CN 2025.10.   Does this mean my 2585 in terms of its use as a satnav will quite quickly become a paper weight?  I cannot remember for sure, but I thought that I was able to install a CN Europe 2023.10 NTU map a couple of years ago, so perhaps the 2585 is NTU map compatible.

  • Hi John, Thank you for your reply and advice.  I have been using the internal storage (only about 6.5GB total and 5.5GB free) for my maps as I have been careful to install only what I need in terms of map coverage.  However, this year, I am driving much further afield abroad, so I will certainly need to have at least a 10GB SD card on which to install the map.  I think I misled myself with the SD card format and the Microsoft advice about FAT32 SD cards preventing access to Garmin devices since an "Anniversary Windows Update".  I don't think this has anything to do with the USB driver failure on my Win10 laptop, which, as JaVaWa pointed out, is now fairly academic.

  • You can check that yourself in Settings > Map & Vehicle > myMaps

The indication "NT" or "NTU" should be part of the map name.

  • Thanks for you reply.  My previous maps show NT in their names.  Does this mean that my 2585 is definitely not NTU map compatible?

  • That's strange, according to the information on Garmins site the 2585 is compatible with NTU maps. You are referring to the City Navigator Europe maps? The maps of North-America are still NT, they don't need Unicode support.

  • Well when you run Express it will let you know if there is a map update available, but in any case your nuvi wouldn't become a paper weight just because the map won't update.
