Incomplete Garmin Express update, evolution from Cyclemap to Topoactive

Hi,
The problem I'm talking about occurred on my Edge 1000, but it may affect all GPS models that need to upgrade from Cyclemap to Topoactive.
Garmin Express offered me the Topoactive update.
So I proceeded with it.
In the end, I noticed that only the "Topoactive Europe - East 2025.10" map was transferred.
Other updates were made (gmapdem, gmapgc), but they were for the Cyclemap version. They had no reason to be proposed.
An attempt to replace the GPS with a USB flash drive yielded the same result.
Now Garmin Express keeps offering me the same update even though I've already done it.

Did you experience the same issue and find a solution?
Thanks for sharing.
Best regards.

  • On my 830 the NA DEM is 2023.10 and the NA Geocode is 2024.10 and they were that way with NA Cyclemaps 2024.20 before the update to TopoActive. I would suspect those don't change very often. Maybe they'll get included in the TopoActive package at some later date, maybe even deleted if they are not needed now. I'm not worried about it unless it becomes a space issue.

  • Hi,
For those interested, after a few mishaps, I managed to install the three TopoActive maps on my EDGE 1000 via GE.
I tried a new map update on a USB drive with the year-old GarminDevice.xml file recovered from an backup.
It was offered as a Central Europe map instead of the usual EAST map.
    Why?
I tried the map update again, this time I had the option to load another map.
I recovered the three TopoActive maps on my edge 1000.

The only problem is that GE suffers from Alzheimer's. Every time GE launches, it wants to relaunch the TOPOACTIVE map update, even though all three maps are fine on the GPS.

    Best regards

  • What does the XML file show now? Maybe it's not equal to what is really on the device. I'm just tossing out something to look at. It does seem strange.

  • Hi,
What's in the XML file? I admit I don't know how to interpret it.
Currently, I have my three Topoactive maps between the internal memory (1) and the SD card (2).
Updating with GE is done directly with the GPS connected via USB.
GE reloads the Topoactive maps correctly if I request a map update.
The problem is that every time I connect my GPS to GE, it systematically offers me the same maps that are already on my device.
Apparently, Topoactive maps have this problem?
    Best regards.

  • Don't see that with the NA map set. Maybe it's a EU thing only. The XML file is what is read and updated by Express and  you can upen it and read it. Not a log so to speak, but a descriptive catalog if you will. I ask because you said you recovered the XML from an old backup.

  • Coming from Cyclemap, I have no experience with Topoactive maps.
The systematic suggestion in GE to update Topoactive maps is information I was given on a Garmin User Forum.
As you say, it might be related to EU maps.
Regarding the GarminDevice.XML file, since I've updated my GPS with all the TOPOACTIVE maps on it, it's updated several times in a loop. The XML file should have been updated.
Thanks again for your involvement in my questions.

  • You're Welcome.

To clarify. The NA TopoActive comes in 3 mapsets, as it did with the Cycle Maps: Canada/Alaska, US, and Middle America. So similar to the EU setup I think. I have had my 830 back on GE at least twice since the update and have not seen the suggestion to reinstall TopoActive.

Good luck in solving the problem. But if the maps work when out-and-about I would just wait and see if Garmin cleans up the mess. Maybe open a Support Ticket with them.

  • Thanks for your advice.
Perhaps we'll see you soon for more discussions.
