Nuvi 40LM maps are free but the Nuvi 255W maps cost $$$

This appears to be a Garmin Express topic IMO. There is NO "product support" since the Nuvi 255W is old. Recently updated North America maps for a Nuvi 40LM with no issues. But for the 255W, I am expected to buy a $70CAN single update or the $130CAN one-time payment option.  Why is that? Can I get a "discount code" from somewhere? Is it worth it given the cost of newer GPS like the Drive-53?

  • When was the last time you updated the 255?

  • Back in 2020. It did cost $ but I do recall it being this amount. In the meantime, I learned the older GPS model (like my 255W) use an older format NT files so that is costly to convert (?). While newer models with newer format NT files are free. Such as the Nuvi 40LM and Drive-53 so their map updates are included in the purchase.

  • The 255W came out around 2008 or 2009 and I don’t think, “out of the box”, included lifetime maps.  My slightly later 265W did cost me extra for “lifetime” maps, and can today be updated.  The nuvi 40LM came packaged as lifetime maps, hence the “LM” in its model designation.

  • Closing as this isn't an Express issue.
