Download misery and defective(?) device

Hello

I have just bought a Garmin eTrex 32x. I tried to update it using Garmin Express but am having frustrating problems. Step 1 of 2 of the download process completes without a problem, with download speeds of between 20Mbps and 50Mbps even though I have a stable 500Mbps from my ISP. A speed test confirms this.
Step 2 of 2 went on for hours and hours. I left it to run overnight thinking it would be ready by morning, but it was stuck and not progressing.

I uninstalled the Garmin Express, restarted the PC and tried again. The same thing happened. Step 2 of 2 eventually froze at 83% after hours of a meagre speed of 650 KB/s.

When trying to turn the device on, I see a very feint Garmin logo that stays on the screen for around 20 seconds before eventually going to the menu screen. When clicking on maps, I am no longer offered the choice of maps that were there when I first switched it on.

I have tried resetting the device but it is still the same.

Have I received a defective device or is there another problem?

Thank you

  • I also receive a 'can't authenticate maps contact content seller for help' message when I start the device. If I have to use Garmin Express to repair it then I'll be on a road to nowhere.

  • Which map are you trying to update? See this FAQ that covers no progress when updating maps

  • Hi

I'm not sure. I just connected it to my PC and ran Garmin Express to check for updates. Garmin Express said there were updates available so I just let it run.

I have just tried to leave it to update again and it never got beyond 93%, even though the process ran nearly a whole evening and the whole night. The 'Can't authenticate maps. Contact content seller for help' message still appears on startup.

I've solved the problem though, I've sent it back and ordered the GPSMAP 65s. Hopefully it's better than the eTrex 32x.

  • With the eTrex did you try adding a memory card?  Are you planning on doing so with the 65s?

  • Hi

Yes, I added a formatted 32GB card and also tried without the card. I'm intending to use the card for the GPSMAP 65s.

  • I don't know how 32x works, but I had to set in settings (in a different model) that downloaded maps go into card, you might want to check if there is that kind of setting in 32x, if you already haven't

  • Hi

Even if I could place maps directly on to the card (is that possible, drag and drop or copy and paste?) I would still have the problem of the 'Can't authenticate maps. Contact content seller for help' message. Anyway, the eTrex 32x is gone and I'm just waiting for the GPSMAP 65s.

Hopefully I won't have problems with it. This is my first handheld GPS device purchase and my first Garmin purchase, so far not a great experience.

  • Not directly, must be done with garmin express. I meant that there could be a setting that tells device to locate files to card.

  • They are different devices, one isn't better than the other, just different. However hopefully you'll manage better with it.
