eTrex will no longer connect to laptop running Windows 10

Hi. I have just encountered a situation where my eTrex touch 35 is not being detected by my windows 10 laptop. The eTrex has been working with this laptop for several months/years without any problem. Up until now, when the eTrex was connected via USB to the PC Windows would detect the device and launch windows explorer etc - but as of yesterday nothing. I launched Garmin Express and attached the eTrex and Express cannot find the device.

I have another laptop running windows 11 - I attached the eTrex and it is detected and it connects to Express ok. I also have a ZumoXT that I normally use with the PC running WIndows 11, so I attached the Zumo to the PC running Windows10 using an USB and it's fine.

The only combination that does not work is the eTrex and the PC running Windows 10 that has worked for several month/years without fail. On the Windows 10 PC I have checked all drivers are up to date and uninstalled/reinstallled Basecamp (just in case)

Anyone got any ideas as to where the problem is?

  • Not sure why you've mentioned BaseCamp but if Express isn't seeing your device try uninstalling then reinstalling Express. Ensure you reboot your computer after each step.

  • Hi - I only mentioned Basecamp as a means of verifying connection.
But on the windows 10 pc (the laptop the etrex normally is used with) - Express removed and reinstalled (ver 7.24.0.0) pc powered off/on. Connected etrex and neither windows file explorer or Garmin express detected the device.
Replaced the etrex with my zumo (same cable same USB port) and both windows file explorer and Garmin Express detect the device)
At this point it kinda of looks like a fault with the etrex!
But I then attached the etrex (same cable) to my other pc (running W11) and it is detected by windows file explorer and Garmin Express (same version 7.24.0.0)!
However, I have just noticed that when I disconnected the etrex from the W11 pc the Garmin connection screen on the etrex went off/blank but when I removed it wrom the W10 pc the Garmin connection screen remained on (etrex has batteries in it) and the screen did not go out/blank until I removed the batteries.
    Hope this provides more insight.

  • Not really. My Etrex is detected on both my Win 10 and 11 systems so unsure what your issue is. Hopefully someone else might know. Sometimes though it can take a while for a device to be detected, how long are you leaving it trying to connect for?

  • I'm having the same issue with my Etrex C. It was working fine a month ago and now it won't connect to either one of my Windows 10 machines. The Garmin USB GPS driver shows that it cannot start.(Code 10) and the I/O device is configured incorrectly. I have downloaded and reinstalled the latest drivers from the Garmin website. Rebooted my PC's. I have done the same with both Garmin Express & Garmin WebUpdater. Looks like something changed in a recent Windows update that has made the USB driver incompatible.

  • The eTrex is left for anything up to 10mins while I'm looking at various things and it does not become accessible. However, the Windows 10 pc does know it's there as it activates an audible notification.

When I connect the Zumo it takes the normal 1-2 minutes to be detected and become accessible - the time between plugging in and the audible notifications for both devices is similar.

  • Good to know we're not alone in this matter!

So it sounds like the problem has been triggered by W10 but is not effecting all Garmin devices (as my Zumo is ok with the same PC/USB port but the problem is consistent across all usb ports on the W10 PC.

  • Although for a Windows 11 issue, you might want to review the thread at Windows utility updates, specifically the last entry about some VB updates.  I have been seeing that as resolution for many Windows 10/Garmin issues lately.  If you desire to try thing I suggest you reboot between the various actions.

  • Mmmm can't say I feel I'm up for this type of work.

However, I've just had another W10 PC undergo the latest m/soft update and the eTrex works fine on that PC - so it's not all W10 PCs.

  • Hi - just so I can verify the problem I'm having with he error you have detected - where is your error (Code 10) being reported?

  • In Device Manager, open up the Garmin Driver and look at the Properties.
