"Install Map to Computer" is missing

I can't get “Install Map to Computer” to come up in Express, so I can install a map from my GPS 66i onto Basecamp and stop wearing out the data cable always having to connect it to see the map in Basecamp and such.

I'm connected fine and seeing the device map “TopoActive NA/US 2024.20” on Basecamp just fine when they are connected

I am, so far, successfully connecting Garmin GPS 66i to the Windows PC desktop and:

Sync'ing with Garmin Express

Seeing the device's TopoActive maps in Basecamp (as long as the PC and device are still connected)

But why can't I do like the tutorials show and install one of the maps from the Garmin GPS 66i like “TopoActive NA/US 2024.20” → into → the PC for Basecamp to see when the device is not connected?

To get a map off the Garmin GPS 66i and installed into Basecamp for PC

Tutorials say to, while successfully connected like I am, with Express and Basecamp all happy:

Open Express – under Your Queue – select Map Details

then in Map Details – select Map Options

then in Map Options you should see:

“Reinstall Map” description and button

And you Should See, as well:

“Install Map to Computer”

Except I have no “Install Map to Computer”

Why?

Searched Forums Before Asking:

Someone seemed to have this option disappear on Mac (I never had it on my PC at all) and made it re-appear by letting it Reinstall the maps, first, so I tried and got an error updating.

I don't even know if I have “Lifetime Maps” or not, just noticed it in posts... I just got the Garmin in like October 2024 anyway... plus, I just want to move the Device's map to the PC, not update the map.

Are the TopoActive Maps copy protected and I'm not supposed to get to use those maps onto my PC hard drive? I thought these tutorials were referring to maps that shipped on the device, though.

Going out on a limb:

Is the workaround to (??)

Figure out the proper folders in both the 66i and Basecamp and go in manually (as a Mass Storage Device or USB drive in Windows, Ctrl-C copy the file, and Ctrl-P paste it into some Basecamp directory?

I see a Custom Maps folder for imported KMZ files etc. in the 66i but am yet to manually track down the TopoActive maps that the device shipped with, when viewing the 66i as a usb drive in Windows...

Any help is appreciated getting stock TopoActive maps from the 66i into Basecamp when the 66i is not connected to the PC with the cable , thank you.

  • Not all maps from all devices can be installed to your PC. If Express isn't showing the option then you either have to connect your device or copy the map to a removeable drive, eg a memory stick or sd card. You could also create a 'virtual drive', see www.javawa.nl/virtualdevice.html

  • Thank you very much:

What's weird is that the Garmin GPS 66i can already be viewed as a removable USB media device (like a flash drive) using just windows. Then, is the problem because the map files are too buried in its directory tree?

If I need to remove the map files from the 66i that shipped with it, namely for TopoActive NA/US 2024.20, and put them on removable memory or a virtual drive, then can you tell me where these files are located in the folder directory tree? I can find a Custom Maps area right in the root but that's just for new KMZ files.

If I were just to clone the whole device to an external USB SSD then I'd be wondering why the 66i itself won't work anyway when it can be browsed like removable memory in the first place.

Thank you, I really am needing this help and appreciate your response you gave me.

  • The problem is as I described. Cloning the whole device would work too. Note you don't remove the map files from your device, simply copy them to a removeable drive. As this isn't an Express issue I'm closing here, if you require further help with BaseCamp please start a new post in the BaseCamp forum.
