Not enough space on computer error - 19GB required

The software will not let me update as it keeps saying Not enough space on Computer, i have a relatively small C drive with about 14 GB free,  and everything else goes to another drive on my PC with plenty of space.

It is not possible to clear or move any more data form the C drive.

How do you point Garmin Express to put its data on another drive?

  • edit, there is plenty of space on my PC it keeps saying not enough space despite there being over 250GB free on Drive B

  • To my knowledge there isn’t any easy way to make GE install on any drive except for the C drive, and you apparently only have 14 GB on that drive.  What I would suggest is you take a relatively large folder (or two) on the C drive and move it to the B drive.  Then make sure the folder or folders are deleted from the C drive, and the recycle bin, then check free space and attempt to install GE.  One folder that is often large would be something like a folder for photos.

  • My guess is that you have multiple map versions stored on your PC and the reason it needs 19GB is that it's trying to deposit yet another map version. In my case, every time I've updated maps, it would deposit the map files on my PC. It might be different for you but check this folder: C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps. If you have old map versions stored there, you can safely delete them.

Note: I don't have maps stored on my PC so my folder is empty.

  • @pshare brings up a good point in that Garmin Express doesn’t do a good job of cleaning up after various actions.

First of all make sure your setting are such that you can see hidden files and folders,

In the folder C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map are numerous folders named Map_Map.NA2021.20 or similar. Each folder is 6+ GB.  You can delete all or most of them.

In the folder C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Application there are folders named Application_Application.express-windows 7.1.4.0 or something similar. Each of those folders are 112 MB.

In the folder C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Firmware there are folders named Firmware_Firmware.006-B19948.00.8.80 or something similar. Each of these folders is about 83 MB. A while back I had 40 of these folders, for a total of 3.3 GB!

Years ago in all the instances I've cleaned out everything except for the most recent 2 to 4 entries and there doesn't seem to be any issues.  These days once reliability of an update is established, I delete them all.

  • A good utility that will examine a drive and report space "hogs" is Tree Size Free and it is available at TreeSize free.   Google it as I can't seem to attach the link.  Install it and then select drive C (top left  corner).  The results will help determine what is using your space.  A general rule of thumb is to have about 40% free space.  This is particularly critical on older spinning platter type drives; not so critical on SSD's.
