Streets missing on Nuvi

A problem that has occurred occasionally over the last few weeks but appears to be getting more frequent. I switch on the ignition, powering up my Garmin Nuvi, the local map appears - but there's nothing much on it. In particular, no roads. I've tried changing various settings, such as level of detail, but nothing works. If I power it off and power it on again, then usually (but not always) the roads appear. My Nuvi is 10 years old - is it time to accept that it has to be retired?

  • What specific nuvi?  Is it up to date as far as maps?  Do you use a memory card?  At 10 years old I would not think that an issue but I say that because I have a nuvi 265W (with lifetime maps) and it updates and works fine.  The 265 dates from about 2008 so is about 16 years old.  The thread at Roads not showing might also be of help.

  • Mine is a 154. The thread you mention relates to a consistent problem (caused by a data [map] fault). In my case, it's inconsistent. Sometimes the smaller roads appear, sometimes not. Usually, but not always, a hard boot reinstates them. Since they can appear sometimes, the map itself must be OK (and I've reinstalled it twice without correcting the problem). As a former computer consultant myself, I would say it's most likely a hardware fault - some component starting to fail. Neither data nor software would be likely to cause a fault of this nature, because in either case the fault would normally be consistent. I was hoping someone else might have experienced the same fault and found a solution.

  • A very strange turn of events has occurred. I tried, for one last time, rebooting to factory defaults. When I was asked for Country, instead of entering UK as I always did previously, I entered Spain (where I now live). The system installed and, lo and behold, all the local streets appeared. I kept it this way for some days, to make sure the effect was permanent - and it appeared to be. I then used Settings to change the language etc. to English. It has now worked perefctly ever since. I'm still holding my breath, however!

  • Doubt if the country choice affected this but a master reset often cures issues so I suspect it was that. Glad it's resolved though.

  • As a former systems programmer myself, I'd be inclined to agree with you; except that I had master reset the device at least 6 times previously with no effect on the problem. Coincidence, perhaps, but maybe not!
