Not Enough Memory Error for My Edge 540 SOLAR in Garmin Express inclusion of the Navigation Free ClimbPro maps which require additional space.

Hello,

I am an experienced road bike rider living in Turkey and an experienced Garmin user.
connect.garmin.com/.../Portakal35

My first Garmin road computer was a 520 with a modest 110MB of memory. Then I bought a 530 with 16GB of memory and a few days ago I bought a 540 Solar with 16GB of memory.

When I connected it to the computer and opened Garmin Express to update the maps and the device due to the inclusion of the Navigation Free ClimbPro maps which require additional space. (To be honest, I bought the device precisely for this feature :/ )
I get the error “Not Enough Memory Error for My Edge in Garmin Express”.

Garmin suggests that I use smaller maps to solve this problem, but there is only one option that includes Turkey.
And that one option covers a very large area of Europe.

There is no other option that only includes Turkey or that does not cover such a large area but includes Turkey.

For my first device 520 with a modest memory, I used https://extract.bbbike.org and used a map that only covered Turkey.
However, this way I had to keep track of map updates and install them manually.

Can you help me with another solution that only covers Turkey or does not cover such a large area but I can receive map updates automatically by Garmin including Turkey?

Best regards

  • 16GB should be enough to install just the Cycle Maps East region (and its ClimbPro data), which includes Turkey.

One way to make sure that available space is not an issue is to first remove any installed maps via Garmin Express and the Manage Maps function, disconnect and reconnect your Edge to the computer and then install the region you want.

If you're not on the latest version of Express (7.23.0) it is advised to upgrade first because there were some changes in recent version on how map region installs are handled.

  • OMG you're right.

Yeah my Garmin Express firmware version is old and when upgrades I can see other and smaller version maps included Turkey :)

Interestingly Garmin Turkey directed to me wrong. They advised delete Gmaprom IMG 1 and Gmaprom IMG 2 but nothing has changed.

But unfortunately even I came back to the factory settings Gmaprom IMG 1 and Gmaprom IMG 2 didn't show up. :/

I have no idea what are they their purpose.

  • Map files do indeed not get restored with a factory reset but usually that's not an issue since you can re-install them with Garmin Express (assuming it's the Cycle Map or a different map purchased from Garmin). The file names do not really matter, usually gmapprom is used for pre-installed maps that come with the device. So it is likely those files where the Garmin Cycle map files for the region that was pre-installed.

  • JungleJim, I really appreciate it.
Sorry, I forgot to thank you in the first message out of surprise and joy. Also thank you for the information about the Gmaprom IMG files. I will try to get these files from a friend who just bought a 540 Solar like me. There was a Chinese sticker as a screensaver. Maybe the European map was pre-installed and the Chinese map was too big for the device because of the space it took up, who knows.
And maybe the Gmaprom IMG files were loops or maps related to China : )

  • No need to get the files from a friend, if you need the China Mainland map again you can install that via Garmin Express or the on device Map Manager. The same applies for any Cycle Map region that Garmin has available.

  • Thanks 9617115
I'm not sure which map data irrelevant.
When you use BBBike you need periodically check the site for newer versions.
Like JungleJim said, I could not see other version of maps because my Garmin Express program not update. When I updated, I can see smaller versions and solved the problem.
Unfortunately, Garmin Support Center Turkey directed to me wrong and I couldn't reach the international service.
