With so many issues with recent Fenix 7 Software Updates (15.77/16.22/17.28 I've had to revert to 14.68 as my OS on my 7XSS, there are a number of Map updates available so can I just install the map updates using GE?
Thanks in advance

Yes, you're given the option just to install the map update unless Garmin consider the software update essential in which case you have to update the software first.
Thanks for the reply but not the answer to the question asked.
The option to upgrade a new version is not essential, Garmin has failed to address several feature updates included in version 15 onwards hence my decision to revert to the more stable 14.68.
I'm only interested in the Map updates, and just want to install these. There is no indication in GE to be able to disable software updates to allow this, surely Garmin cannot force a version update if it's not wanted.
You need to read what I wrote as I did answer your question. If the option to upgrade isn't considered as essential then you can just install the map update.
surely Garmin cannot force a version update if it's not wanted.
But they do.
They only do if it's considered an essential update.
They only do if it's considered an essential update.
Obviously, EVERY stable version of a software release is essential for Garmin. The user does not have the choice to stay on a version he is satisfied with.
We are talking about outdoor watches here. I can't say what the situation is with other devices such as navigation devices.
Really? When you run Express there are options to Install all or just click on one option. Often you can install the map without selecting All. Have you tried that?
Really?
Yes, really. It doesn't matter if I don't confirm the firmware update in Express. Express automatically copies the "gupdate.gcd" to the watch. When you remove the watch, a window opens on the watch saying "A software update is available. Do you want to install it IMMEDIATELY or LATER".
The watch does not ask if you want to install the update, only when. There is no way to prevent the gupdate.gcd from being copied to the watch. This affects every device firmware.
I have been using the watches since 2016 (since fenix 3). as far back as I can remember, this behavior has always been like this.
You mean it would be different?
Never seen that behaviour but the solution is simple. Just delete the gupdate.gcd file
Just delete the gupdate.gcd file
Yes, you can do that. Correct. However, the gupdate.gcd is then automatically copied to the clock again the next time it is connected to Express. So you have to delete it every time.
So there is no way to tell Express that I don't want the FW update file.
