Sorry we're having a problem communicating with our servers

I got a brand new Garmin Drive 53. Downloaded Garmin Express. It sees my device, but when I click to refresh to check for updates, I get the message "sorry we are having a problem communicating with our servers." I did all the troubleshooting tips on the website, with no results. When I exit the Garmin Express app, I get the notification, through Windows, that there is a software update for Drive 53, but I am given no way to install it.
