"There was an error installing the update."

I just tried to update the CNNANT map on my Nuvi 2598LMTHD and PC -- Windows 10 (22H2) -- with Garmin Express (which also updated itself to v.7.22.1.0).  I've done this a dozen times.  The PC map was installed on the PC for Basecamp, but I received the failure message in the subject line late download to the Nuvi.  A bit later, Windows popped up another message, "USB Device not recognized.  The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned..."  The first message is not at all helpful.  The second message appears not to be true:

I removed disconnected the Nuvi from the PC and removed its auxiliary flash card where the maps have to be stored.  Then the Nuvi and the flash card are individually recognized and appear to be OK.  Even the new map appears to be there but does not work.  Repeating the exercise (Nuvi update only this time) led to the same dual error messages.

I'm afraid to re-format the flash card for fear of losing something important like my "lifetime subscription to CNNANT.  What's happening, and how do I correct it? -- 6430617 (Sorry, but I can't figure out how to change my screen name)

  • What is the size of your microSD card?  Not that I’m encourageing you to format the card but I doublt that would remove your lifetime subscription status.  That is something keyed to the nuvi, not the card.  Do you have a spare card you can test it with?  Something preferably at 16GB or larger.

  • Thanks, JohnfromPA, for your quick answer.  My SD card is 32 GB (which I believe they told me was the largest accepted by the device).

Your suggestions are very helpful, but meanwhile I tried again to update the map to the device, and this time it worked!  Of course it didn't show up on the device right away, making me think the update had failed again, but after a few power cycles, the new map did appear.  All solved.

Now if anyone just knows how to update my screen name (without creating a new account!), that would make everything perfect.  Cheers!
