latest version of garmin express is preventing Windows 11 from entering sleep mode

I found my windows 11 computer was no longer entering sleep mode when unused.  doing a powercgf /requests showed the culprit to be Garmin Express.  I recalled that a new version was installed  a couple of days ago.  This is an unacceptable, gross waste of energy.

  • If indeed there is an issue it should be fixed but in the interim open GE, go to Settings, General and make sure "Always keep Garmin Express running in the background" is unchecked.  There is little if any reason to have it running in the background.

Through various updates Windows 11 has been known to be a bit funky with the power settings so I would recheck them.

Once the settings are taken care of, exit Garmin Express, reboot the PC and retest.

  • This seems to take care of the problem.  I assume that means I need to manualy start GE when I need it (not a big deal, just not what I am used to.

  • Even though GE isn't a memory hog, many people prefer to manually start it when needed.  GE by the way may start and run at about 2 AM to check for updates.  Since there are only about 2 to 3 updates a year you may wish to check to make sure that isn't happening.  Those daily starts also result in numerous log files being written to your drive.  See if you have them at C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Logs\Express and C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Logs\SelfUpdater.  If the log files  exist, then check Task Scheduler (or whatever it may be in Win 11) and disable the daily task.
