Express and Edge 500

I got my old Edge 500 out of storage and charged it up to re-add to my account with Express.

The software is current at 3.30 but Express says there is a Time Zone Map 36.00 update available and the update fails everytime.

And yes I know the device was discontinued in 2019 so I don't expect miracles, but this is annoying everytime I upload activities.

Other than this problem the activities upload just fine.

The main reason I'm using this device again is because my Venu 2 cannot receive courses and the Edge 500 can. That function also works just fine.

BTW. I even tried WebUpdater, but that fails also.

I'm thinking I should just ignore the Time Zone thing anyway.
I would think the device should work fine even without Time Zone information.

TIA

  • The change log for the various time zone maps can be found at Time Zone map change logs.  As you can see not all that important except for some border States and Kazakhstan.  The border States might be Arizona Texas and anything else that might border Mexico.

  • Problem solved.

Rather than doing a Master Reset and all the hassle that creates, I took a chance and deleted "gmaptz.img" from the Garmin folder on the Edge and then ran it through Express again, and it updated. Probably the file was corrupt.

One item of note that may be of interest to someone else with a similar problem. The XML file did NOT have a path defined to the gmaptz.img file which led me to deleting the file. After it updated, the XML file showed a path to the new file as it should be.
