Can't access activity from Forerunner 10

Recently I had the issue where, when I plugged my Forerunner 10 into my Windows 10 PC to sync a new activity, it asked me to format it. At the same time Garmin Express wouldn't recognise the watch, and I couldn't navigate to the files on the watch via Windows Explorer. I followed Garmin online help for this issue and turned the watch on and off; however this wiped / lost the activity in the process.

I currently have an activity on the watch I don't want to lose, however I have the same issue again where Windows wants me to format the watch. I don't want to turn the watch off in case the activity is lost again. Any ideas??
