i have just updated my garmin sat nav and although it tells me the process has completed, when I go to use my sat nav it says no detailed maps were found on this device

Check in Settings, Map&Vehicle, myMaps ... what do you see?

I'm wondering if you are using a microSD memory card? The DS66 supports microSD memory cards from 4 to 256 GB. Memory cards must use the FAT32 file system format and if more than 32 GB, they must be formatted using the device. At least with present map sizes 32 GB is ample.
