Nuvi 250

I have an old Nuvi 250 which was UK based and the map content was UK/Ireland.

  1. I have reason to resurrect it as the car I will use it in does not have any navigation option. My Garmin app automatically updated itself to Garmin Express.
  2. Somewhere along the line I have inadvertently uploaded Central European maps. The details of my UK maps has disappeared and when I connect my Nuvi through Garmin Express it checks for updates to express and then map content which it defaults to European. In looking at the drop down map selection for map change there is no UK map option. I have a formatted SD card in place as I was advised by the Garmin tech support in Southampton that available memory may have been the issue for failure to automatically download.
  3. All I want is my UK maps back.
  4. What can I do?
  • Your nuvi 250 is a very old model and long discontinued. However according to support.garmin.com/.../ it can still be updated.  To change the map installed on your device you must first use Express to update the current map. Then run Express again and you should see the option to Change map.

  • Many thanks for your reply. My main difficulty with the Garmin express app is that the UK maps are not available on the drop down menu. The UK map has not updated in the background on connecting the nuvi 250. Where can I find the UK maps.

  • As I've already said you must first update the map on your device, which you said was the Central European map. Only when you do that will you get the option to Change map, UK should then be in the dropdown list.  If it isn't post which maps are available

  • Hi.

You must have incredible patience to deal with these types of issues. Somewhere along the line either by accident or fault my UK maps have disappeared off the unit.

The only maps showing on the drop down menu are

    1. NE Europe partial region.

    2 Central Europe Partial Region

    3. NW Eastern Europe.

    4. Germany.

    5. Turkey.

I was told by the Garmin Support team that the unit should automatically recognise that it is a UK purchase and as such the UK maps should automatically update in tandem with any other selection from the drop down map options. That might suggest the unit no longer recognises “where it was born”.

  • Is your nuvi 250 fitted with the extra memory card?  I’m not sure if that would impact the issue, but most likely it is needed.  Get a card around 16 GB if you don;t already have something.

  • Yes. After first talking to the Garmin support team they suggested a memory card might be needed as the UK maps might be too detailed for the residual space on the unit. A formatted 32GB unit is in place and when the unit is synced the Garmin Express program recognises it. But in spite of that there is no auto download of UK update. It did it once but I thought if there was plenty of SD space I could download a second region map. That is when the problem arose. Those later maps seem to have displaced the UK ones.

    Where to now?

  • Sorry but I'm still not clear if using Express you have updated the map you have on your 250. If you haven't then UK will not appear. If you have then I suggest you try the Reinstall map option, then having done so try the Change map option. If that doesn't work try the cloning method explained here www.poi-factory.com/.../39231

  • I am sorry for not being as clear as I should be. I am using Garmin Express but the option to update UK maps dos not appear when the unit is connected. Unfortunately i fear the UK maps are no longer present on the unit as part of it’s core software and maybe as such that is why the synching does not update UK maps. In respect of the reinstall option all that function does is reinstalls the unwanted European maps. I think I might have reached the cloning option you mention unless from what I have said in this message you can suggest anything else.

I did not mean to sign off previously without a “regards” or “thanks” so pleas accept an apology on that.

    Thanks

    SJ

  • You still haven't answered the main question, have you updated the map that is installed on your device to the latest one.  Only after doing that will the option to change maps appear and only then will you get the option to select the UK map.

  • Hi and thanks again for your help.

I followed the cloning process and the SD card had whole of Europe maps downloaded.

Some of the files named for changing were very slightly differently named and it looked as though they also might have already been created by the cloning process.

As best possible I followed the instructions and appears to be at the point where the SD card is now recognised within the Nuvi 250 unit while looking via the tools option on Garmin Express. There was no specific instructions for the Nuvi 250.

I have now become stuck. I am still unable to find the UK maps option in the choosing a region drop down menu. If I choose reinstall Express simply reinstalls the European region already on the unit.

I am still left with the conundrum how can I get the UK maps onto the Nuvi, probably from the SD card in it's Nuvi 250 slot.

I think the SD card has this data but being able to select from it to do so appears to be the issue.

    Regards
