GarminDrive Deluxe 50 "memory full"

My GPS is reportedly full at 98% and I've inserted a 32 GB SD card but I still can't install a map update. (The SD card is recognized)

Any suggestions?

Do I have to remove some amount of device data to allow use of the SD card? If so, how much?

Is there an option to wipe the Garmin and do a fresh install with the new map updates?

No, but you can free up some space easily enough. Delete the .jcv file from the JCV folder.
