Garmin Nuvi 1390LMT keeps shutting down

Hi, my Garmin Nuvi 1390LMT keeps shutting off every minute or 2 in the car and even while updating on the computer.I tried resetting to factory mode but no avail. Is there a way to correct this. I tried mass storage mode as one user recommended but I do not think my unit has this setup. Thank you for all suggestions

  • I’ll make the assumption that in the car you are using the Garmin supplied charger cable.  If not find it and then give it a try.  Note that if the GPS battery is very low the GPS may power up, then rapidly shut off.  That may be because the accessory outlets in most cars is OFF when the car is off and driving it for a short period of time is insufficient to charge the device.  You might want to get out the manual, and learn the difference between “Standby” (essentially asleep but still using power) and “Off”.  If you have a compatible in-home charger, plug the unit in and let it charge for 8 to 12 hours.

Another problem can be with the USB port on the back of the GPS.  Many people when using the device in a car allow the excess length of cable to just dangle, and that puts stress on the USB port, ultimately resulting in it being unreliable.  I always suggest that once the unit it mounted to the windshied or other mount, wrap the excess cable around the mount to minimize the strain on the USB port.
