Just noticed today that Express was telling me that it hadn't synced since June (odd, since only my bike ride from yesterday hadn't synced) and it was not recognizing my device even though Windows detected it just fine. Tried my wife's device (both are Edge 520s) and same story. I went through Garmin's troubleshooting doc and none of those steps worked. Read a little in the forums and tried an old version (6.1.1) and that worked just fine. But I still haven't read any posts here with anyone having quite the same trouble. I got no error messages whatsoever. It just didn't see my devices, so it wouldn't sync or install updates.
