Updating UK & Ireland map

On running Garmin Express and connecting my Nuvi205 I am advised "Map Update Available".  Clicking on 'View details' shows the update is for 'Western Europe'.  The map installed is 'UK and Ireland'.  I have made several unsuccessful attempts to update the map.  How do I update the 'UK and Ireland map' please?

  • How is it unsuccessful? Where does it fail? Any error messages?

  • It fails by offering only to update 'Western Europe' map instead of 'UK & Ireland' map - which I have updated many times over years.  How do I get to update the correct map please?

  • Then it's not unsuccessful or failing, it's offering that map either because it now includes UK or because your device no longer has enough space.  See here for what to do, it refers to NA maps but its equally applicable to the EU ones.

  • I have had the Nuvi205 for some years.  It has always had the UK & Ireland map installed which has always updated without a problem - and without an SD card.  This time it has insisted on installing Western Europe maps and UK & Ireland map is not an available option.  Installing a 32Mb SD card (which was not required previously) does not resolve the issue.

I  have not made any changes (as far as I know) to the setup and I don't understand why it should suddenly not recognise and update the UK & Ireland map.

  • Because maps have increased in size as time goes by. Follow the instructions in my post above and in the link I posted.

  • You say "it's offering that map [Western Europe] either because it now includes UK or because your device no longer has enough space."

The Western Europe map does not include UK & Northern Ireland.  I have updated the UK & Northern Ireland map successfully for many years and properties now reports 605MB used out of 938MB capacity so I doubt the issue is because of space available.  Indeed I have installed a mini SD card which does not improve the problem at all.  I have uninstalled / reinstalled Garmin apps but the issue persists.  There must be another cause of the issue.  Any ideas please?  The usefulness of the unit is limited without the map being updated.  Thanks

  • See the link I posted. Install the map being offered to your device. Install the full map to your PC then send the part you want to your device. What you've done in the past is immaterial as maps get larger over time, and the 205 was first released over 15 years ago. Garmin have at least ensured you can still update the maps even though the way you have to do it has changed slightly.

  • The only areas available are Northwest Eastern Europe (AT, CZ, HR, HU, PL, SI, SK), Germany and Turkey.  How do I get it to download UK & Northern Ireland please?

  • I have inserted a miniSDcard.  It is showing as being formatted to FAT32 (the same as the Nuvi205) with a unused capacity of 14.4Gb.

I have used Garmin Express to install  the GE map (using the option to Garmin and hard disk).  I do not actually want a map of Germany but thought it would, at least, be proof of concept that downloading a map is possible.  That was about 17:00 last night. Late last night it was showing 65.5% complete with 14 hours plus remaining.  Now (now at 08:40 the following morning) it is still showing 65.5% complete but with 10 hours remaining (and lengthening as I type this) so Garmin Express has not stalled completely.  The total length of time will be over 26 hours (copying files at 629.8 KB/s).  It has taken far too long and there is no assurance that it will ever complete and if so if it would be successful.  That cannot be right.  Even so I will still not have an updated map of UK & Ireland and would then have to remove the map of Germany and download the map of UK & Ireland.

I have concluded a high probability that the Germany map download / install will not complete successfully and have aborted the process.  The unit offers a change of country to Germany but will not calculate a route.  Thankfully the UK and Ireland map seems to work OK.

Would reformatting the unit (to permanently remove anything which may be causing the problem) and installing software and UK and Ireland map be a solution?  What do I do now?
