Express version 7.17.3.0 can't find GPSMAP 66i, old version does...

Plug in GPSMAP 66i, Windows finds it, BaseCamp finds, it, it takes no time at all.

Garmin Express version 7.17.3.0 does not see it, prompts me to plug my device in, no amount of swapping USB ports, cables, etc. gets GE to see the plugged in device.

Uninstalled, reinstalled from scratch. No dice.

Rollback to older version of GE, works again no problems.

Funnily enough this behaviour leads me towards seeing this as a SW issue.

  • If you’ve been following things, you might have noticed that versions prior to 7.13.3.0 have the running in the background switch in GE enabled by default and 7.13.3.0 has it disabled.  You might want to disable it in the previous version (if not done already), reinstall 7.13.3.0, reboot and then retest.

  • Ok. I had already tried a simple restart after installing, no joy. That thread seems to indicate more steps may be involved.

It's worse.  7.13.3.0 can permanently sets GE as a startup app.  The way to confirm that is the case is to untick the 'run in background' option in GE, close GE, restart the PC, then check to see if GE is running in the background (look for its icon in the system tray).  You can also check the registry to see if there is a Garmin related entry in:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If either are true, some options for dealing with it are:  1) remove that registry key, 2) disable it as a startup app, 3) close it using the system try icon whenever you don't want it running.
