Garmin Express / Nothing "Express" about it... Super Slow

Yet for many others including myself my CN maps update in around 30 minutes. Which map are you trying to update?

I’m trying to update a new eTrex 22x, which comes with Topoactive maps for Europe. (About 9.2gb ) What are CN maps?
Garmin Express failed twice, wasting about 3 hours. Eventually I left it after it had been running for 5 hours and went to bed.

This morning it had finished, but Basecamp only shows TopoActive Europe SE and the Global Map. My previous etrex 22x allowed me to change to Europe SW, which shows Britain.

 I have seen your previous posts on this topic. You must have a very good connection to Garmin’s server. My broadband download speed is 34.15 Mbps and the GPS has a class 10 micro SD, but Express only managed 507.7 kb/s.

Have you seen all the comments on the right? E.g. Is it because Garmin’s servers are super slow? Garmin Express does nothing?  I am not alone.

CN likely means City Navigator.

On the eTrex 22x giving you issues, I see you are using a memory card and if so what is the size, format protocol, and available space?  See support.garmin.com/.../

32gb Class 10 FAT32, it was brand new. Straight from the package into the 22x.

It doesn't appear as though it has been used by Express, as it has 26.7gb free out of 29.4gb.

That sound decent as far as the card.  Are you updating with a direct cable to the device?  Don’t use a hub.  The other thing would be to verify you are using your fastest USB ports.  For instance my Dell laptop has several USB 2 ports but two USB 3 ports.  Like SUSSAMB says, my download to a GPS are not long, but it has been awhile so I can’t give you and exact amount of time.

I don't have a particularly fast server. I'm with Virgin Media in UK and my download speed is around 100Mbps. My computer is around 10 years old and runs Win10.  Map downloads are never an issue. If you're still having issues you might wish to investigate the cloning method, although I've never had to use it. It does eliminate some errors in a users system www.poi-factory.com/.../39231

I have tried plugging the eTrex 22x into a USB 3.0 port, but my laptop doesn't recognise it. My previous etrex 22x worked on USB 3, but  wasn't faster.

It seems that the issue is the speed at which Express downloads the data, not the speed of the connection to the device.

What I said, in red, is wrong. Trying the cloning methos with the Etrex 22x plugged into USB 3, transfer to my laptop is running at 660kb/s. Read speed is always faster than write, so the issue is very poor transfer speed of the device. That means that cloning will probably fail, or take ages. USB 3 is OK with Explorer.

I'll try it with a spare card, although I don't hold out much hope. As I have said many times, the issue appears to be the speed at which Express downloads the data.

Unfortunately Garmin don't say where the data is downloaded to, so I can't see when Express stops downloading and starts updating devices.

Longshot, but go into device manager and makes sure the port you use on the laptop has “Selective Suspend” disabled.  Also, have the laptop plugged in when you do your updates.  Selective Suspend selectively shuts down USB ports to conserve battery life.

Stevef48, on another note, you have had problems for at least a few years, and with the eTrex, several computers, several versions of Windows, etc. so perhaps you should be looking elsewhere for the issue.  See you comments at forums.garmin.com/.../garmin-express-nothing-express-about-it-super-slow

I am trying to download Europe maps on a system and connection testing at 980 MB/s. Download speed is at 59 KB/s. It is being installed on a new and tested  Class 10 SD Card (Class 10 = minimum 10 MB/s transfer rate). GPS is a Drivesmart 65, hardly old and obsolete as it is current on Garmin's website. This has nothing to  with what map is being downloaded and what it is being transferred to. This has to do with Garmin's inability to transfer maps and updates with any kind of speed. As an example, the transfer time required for 10 Gb at my current tested speed is 1 minute 21 seconds. Lets say, for the sake of argument, that I am running at only 10% of my tested speed, the download would take 13 minutes 30 seconds. Yet here, three hours later my download, at 51.4 KB/s, is 3.4% done, and Express is noting that another 25 hours is required. As for decompressing the files, tests show that it takes approximately 4 minutes to decompress 10 Gb of files on a midrange Windows 10 PC. I am directly cabled from the GPS to a high speed USB3 port directly connected to the motherboard. This has been tested on MY PC today. So there is NOTHING wrong with my system or the systems of many of other people having download issues. The only common factor is GARMIN.
