Garmin install location

1. Can I install the Garmin Express, BaseCamp etc to another drive other than C:?

2. I noticed the install has my 2023 & 2024 maps in two locations, do I need them both?

Summation of issue.
My System drive image backups taking longer, size increased 30 GB from Garmin install, most of it in these two folders
C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService\Downloads\Map\
   I keep the 2023 and 2024 map downloads total = 19.8 GB
C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps\
   I keep the 2023 and 2024 map downloads total =  9.77 GB

  • BaseCamp uses the maps in ProgramData\Garmin\Maps.  You can delete the ones in CoreService

Express and BaseCamp need to use the C drive. You can however move the BaseCamp maps to another drive if you want. JaVaWa's GMTK program will do that correctly for you

  • Thanks for the info Sussamb, I'll delete the ones in CoreService and also check that link out.
Also just curious what are the CoreService maps for, is that just something that G. Express uses for tracking?
In any case I'm glad I can move them to a one time backup location that won't have to occur every time I do system drive image backup.

  • Those are the files that Express downloads and then compiles into the files sent to your device. This means if you have 2 or more devices or ever need to reinstall a map to your device Express doesn't need to download those files again. You could always just leave the latest in CoreService but these days when most have unlimited data it's really just as easy to allow Express to download them again if ever needed after you've updated your device(s).
