Garmin Express shows Connected, update shows plug in your device

I downloaded Garmin Express, installed it and connected my S40 watch. Garmin Express shows Approach S40 Connected.

I then went to hit update, and now the message I get is "Plug in your Device" - should I wait? I have had this watch a couple of years and have updated it successfully in the past. I thought I would update the maps today.

I did not reboot my computer (since Garmin Express shows it connected).

Try removing your device from Express then re-add it
