Device software Install?

Recently Device battery showing low . . . anyhow upon connecting Garmin Drive 51 to Laptop, Express said Device needed Updated Help file.  So downloaded Help file and that was that, or so I thought. Was time to eat so turned everything off.
Next morning turned device on (not connected to USB) to check settings and it says recent Updates need Installed (Loaded or something like that).
I clicked to Install, but after 3 mins progress bar hadn't moved much and looking Low battery I panicked and plugged in USB. Then device immediately went to PC transfer (and/or charging) screen, and Help file install was stopped. Later after charging battery I finished help file install with device unconnected.

My Question:  Is there a way to  get the Device to go into Operational mode while still being connected to USB?   (or for power in loading a recent download?)

A neighbor said he thought there was a special USB cable that would do that but wasn't sure.
Any enlightenment in this area would be appreciated.

  • The video at Garmin communication with computer might be worth viewing.

The best cable to use is the one that came with the Garmin device.  There are two types of USB cables, one that transfers data and charges the device, the other only being a charging type cable.  Unfortunately it isn't easy to tell just by looking what you may have.  It .  If you aren't  sure what you may, try swapping with a different cable.  Another thing would be to make sure your laptop is plugged in during the operation and do not use a USB hub.  Some laptops operating on battery will shut down some ports to improve battery life.  Try a different laptop port as well.

File transfer mode is discussed at File transfer mode.  That may or may not apply to the Drive 51.

    Good luck!
