I can't add any of my three Garmin devices in to Garmin Express application due to "problem connecting to the Garmin servers".

Massively frustrated by this app - I have always had a weird issue wtih it whereby when I connected my garmin edge 800 or garmin vivoactive HR to sync an activity the app would recognise the device and show it as connected in the app - so far so good.  When I then click on the device to sync the activities, it would always prompt me to enter email address and password.  When I enter it and click ok, the window momentarily closes only for it to pop up again asking me to enter email address and password.  No matter how many times you do this, it never works however, if just close the window it did actually log in to garmin account and would let me sync activities.

My wife has claimed my Vivoactive HR so I resurrected my trusty old Forerunner 220.  Again Garmin Express recognises it and says it's connected however when I try to add it I am prompted with the dreaded email address & password screen and a new error this time - There was a problem connecting to the Garmin servers.  We're unable to sign you in because our servers are unavailable at this time.

Made the foolish mistake of uninstalling garmin express app altogether then downloading and reinstalling a fresh copy - now can't add any of my three devices as all give the same above error.

I've always stuck with Garmin but the app is so terrible and has never fully worked, tempted to try a competitor.

Any ideas?

Paul

  • Garmin Express is, by far, the most rubbish app I have ever come across!

Going back almost to the dawn of time the same problem "our servers are unavailable at this time" is reported.

The proposed "fixes" are laughable! "Disconnect from the router and restart your computer" Pardon?????? Well into the 21st century Garmin cannot employ a technical team who can write a relatively simple app to talk over the internet? How many thousand others that do that already exist?? Just about every major device maker has one! Fitbit do, Apple does etc. - Garmin, for goodness sake get your act together.

  • There is another thread where people noticed the clock was several minutes on their devices and once it was manually set, then the update would proceed.

  • The time on my device is accurate to the second and aligned precisely with that on my PC running Garmin Express.

  • Have you worked your way through the steps in the Garmin FAQ? As they generally resolve the issue it is pointless simply ranting unless you do. I've used Express on multiple devices for around 10 years and have had no more than a couple of issues.

  • Yes, I have, with great care and several times - hence the rant.

I am by no means devoid of technical skills, running my own collection of servers across two locations, writing my own code to run on them as well as running a range of standard software, databases, web servers etc etc.

i also have devices from a range of entities that regularly acquire remote updates, attach to remote services etc and all of them work more reliably (ie first time) than Garmin Express.

  • I've also followed the FAQ steps (all of which are a bit pointless) and it makes no difference, left with no choice other than manually uploading the activity .FIT files after every workout.  Incredible how flaky the software is compared to the hardware which seems to be bullet proof (which is why I kept coming back to Garmin despite paying a premium over other competitors)

  • Tried all of that, still doesn't work.  17.5.0.0 still works
