Express 7.15.2.0 - Entire Database GONE!

Restarted my computer and opened Express only to find my entire database of > 40 devices completely GONE!

This is about the 5th time this has happened, and Garmin seem to be clueless why.

I don't have a full weekend to reconnect each device one at a time and enter registration details etc and reconfigure upload and download settings and connect IQ settings etc. etc etc.

  • For whatever reason, attaching my old Vivoactive 1 to my Desktop PC would cause a crash. That didn't happen with my laptop.

Tech support actually called me about it. We tried some things to fix it like running Checkdisk on the VA1. It reduced the frequency of crashes but didn't eliminate them.

When I would reboot, I would see what you see. I have 6 devices and setting them up every time is a pain. Your situation is a nightmare.

Did your PC crash from connecting a Garmin device? Is that why you rebooted?

  • Long shot, but try running the executable as administrator.  The path to the executable on my Win 10 machine is C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Express and the file is express.exe.  Right click it and select run as administrator.

  • No, I did not reboot due to a crash. Thank you for the suggestions!

  • @JohnfromPA Thank you also for your suggestion. I discovered the 'source' of the issue and will post an update shortly.

  • UPDATE:

I have found the 'source' of the issue, but not the cause.

The PC directory C:\ProgramData\Garmin\CoreService contains a file named devices_list.xml, and this file has been corrupted.

I was able to find an older archival copy of the file, copied it to this directory, and I only had to manually add a half dozen devices from recent months, so much better than on previous events when I had to do them all. Fortunately, I had made a copy of this directory the last time this happened, just for this reason.

Still no idea why this file frequently becomes corrupted. Perhaps Garmin Express software engineers never intended for anyone to have more than a handful of devices!

  • Good to know.  In checking my PC, I have four folders shown with a .PNG file in each.  The folders have numeric names like 3394953905.  However, I only have three devices, although I did remove one a few months back.  Garmin Express doesn't clean up after itself, so I'll have to investigate the PNG files.

  • Those folders are the unique device ID numbers for reach device, and the PNG is the image displayed in Express for that device.
