Windows not seeing Nuvi 2559

Hi, I bought a nuvi 2559 about 8 years ago. I wanted to update the maps but windows or Garmin express cannot see the device. I've tried 4 different USB cables, two diffferent laptops and taken it it a PC repair shop, who have tried numerous cables and PCs of their own and they cannot get their PCs to see the device. I've tried MPT and mass storage options and deleted all user data, the battery on the device is fully charged. I've contacted Garmin support, who have only offered me a 30 percent discount on a new SATNAV. They said they no longer offer support for this device due to it's age. But speaking to a guy at support, he said he is still using an older device, so I'd like to think I could update maps if I could only get Garmin express to see the device. I would be grateful if anyone could offer any suggestions?

Kind regards

Dan

  • I would uninstall Garmin Express but do an in-depth uninstall.  Garmin has outlined a method at https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=6nBhfHhXik18XrRU6BfULA.  Specifically, scroll down to the Windows only Advanced portion and expand that content.

  • Thanks John for your help. I've tried all that you have said but still no joy. I've tried 2 laptops and the guy at the PC repair shop has tried at least 2 different PCs and he couldn't get them to see the device either, this is why I'm thinking it's the SATNAV but that's a guess.

  • Sure sounds like the connector or something else internal.   Palm Electronics has been known to reliably repair GPS units.  Hopefully still in business!  You might touch base with them and see what a repair might cost.  The other thing would be purchase something off eBay, perhaps moving up at the same time.

  • Thanks again, but I didn't mention, I'm in Sweden at the moment and I 'm usually living in the UK. I could get another or download google maps for offline use but I don't want to be defeated by this as I feel it's a simple fix and I'm just not seeing it. Maybe there's another way rather than downloading map updates via garmin express? Maybe after so many years there's some software on the device that renders it invisible to windows as a ploy to force you to buy a new device?

  • "...but windows or Garmin express cannot see the device"; I think that statement is key that something in the device is not working properly.  I have seen numerous mentions of various Garmin devices where the power connector has issues after many years of use.  If you are a "tinkerer" search for instructions on how to open the case (replace battery is typical) and see if you can get to the level of inspecting where the power socket is soldered to the board.  How to do this on a nuvi 2495 can be found at www.youtube.com/watch

  • Check the cables you're using, ensure you're using a data cable and not one that simply provides power. Otherwise it would seem the device is faulty if it's not being seen by Windows

  • Thanks, yes, I am a tinkererSlight smile, I’ll see if I can get a new port off eBay.

  • This was the first thing I thought it could be. I tried 3 cables then bought 2 more. One was definitely data transfer and charging capable. The guy in the pc repair shop also yelled with his own cables, so I think I Can safely rule out the cables.

  • Check the rest of that FAQ then

  • Thanks for the link. I’m too busy at the moment but I will dismantle it soon and look at the port. I’m leaning more towards the problem being in this area because I’ve remembered that every time I start the device, I get a message saying it’s not a genuine garmin charging cable. I bought one of eBay as I left my original on another country. I eventually picked up the original but I’m still getting the same message from both the original and eBay cables. So the problem might be in the port area.
