Garmin Express not installing map to computer (GE 7.13.1.0)

I recently re-formatted the SSD on my laptop computer and then reinstalled Garmin Express. I connected up my Nuvi 42 and then proceeded to reinstall the map to my computer, as it was before it was formatted. There is more than enough space available on the SSD.

Unfortunately it keeps on giving an error message, which can be seen below: The map does install to the GPS without any problems.

This is the same computer on which this was done without any problems previously, same GPS, clean install of Windows 10, no VPN, 50/50 Mbps fiber connection. If I do this on another computer (also recently formatted, same version of windows 10, same installation media used.), I do not get this error. I am using the same GPS and same cable each time.

Any suggestions?

  • One thing I notice in your description is the choice of wording "same version of windows 10, same installation media used", and I wonder if that may be related.  Are you aware that Windows 10, from any given installation media will only install and run properly on one PC.  There are some people that have installed Win 10 on multiple PC's, but not without issues, some of which include software not running properly.  Review the content at https://turbogadgetreviews.com/can-you-install-windows-10-on-multiple-computers/ or www.techadvisor.com/.../how-to-install-windows-on-more-than-one-pc.html.

  • Windows 10 reactivates your installation based on the digital license linked to your Microsoft account or located on the computer itself. This year so far i have reinstalled Windows 10 on literally dozens of computer without any problem. They all had previous legal and activated versions of Windows 10 installed, some home versions, some professional versions , some 32 bit and other 64 bit. ALL of them were installed using the same 64GB flash-drive. This definitely is not a Windows installation problem, but rather a Garmin Express problem. It may be related to the Microsoft .net version installed on my computer, I'll play around with it and also remove and reinstall GE to see if I can get this matter resolved.

  • On the PC giving you a problem, check the Windows activation status by going to Start, then select Settings > Update & Security and then select Activation.  The Activation should show as "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account".

You might try removing everything, then try doing the installation in compatibility mode.

Garmin Express also requires specific versions of .NET framework.  See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=2TGeapPjJ6037l0VAIlkz6 for guidance in that manner.  To check what versions are installed, open Control Panel and go to Programs > Programs and Features, then click Turn Windows features on or off in the left pane and you'll see what is installed and being utilized.  In my case .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) and .NET Framework 4.8 Advanced Services are shown.  However, to get my GE to run properly I have to run it in compatibility mode (for Windows 8).

Also required is a specific version of Visual C++ Redistributable Packages.  Check https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=oYGyCdSQqs4ZXfk7kZDk36 for support on that potential issue.  You can check what versions are installed by doing as above; open Control Panel and go to Programs > Programs and Features.  Scroll down the alphabetical list to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable section.  You might have several versions listed.  Make sure you have the version needed by GE.  Don't delete any versions.
