Slow maps installation

Hi All

Last night I purchased the Garmin Europe cycling maps with a view to installing on my Edge 810. I know its quite an old device but is listed as being compatible with the maps.

When I tried to install I got a error saying I needed to install a microSD card but it must be no more than 32GB. So I got my hands on a 32GB microSD card and slotted it into the 810.

It got past the previous issues but now I am finding the install speed of the maps is ridiculously slow. It started off at 5MB/s now its dropped to about 600KB/s and saying it will take 5-6 hours.

Any idea how to speed this up? Its the latest version of Garmin Express on a modern PC.

TIA

  • As a start, what kind of download speed do you have?  The “modern PC”, how much free storage space?

  • fast.com says 44Mbps so fairly speedy. The PC is an Asus i7 laptop with about 800GB of free space,16GB RAM, nothing running on it apart from garmin express. Strong wifi connection to router in the same room.

Other posts mention you need to use the original garmin cable, but I am not sure if I am, how can I tell?

  • Personally I don't think the original cable is all that important and there isn't any way to tell.  Having said that, there are two types of cables; one is for charging only and the other type is for data transfer and charging.  Since data transfer is obviously happening in your case the cable is likely OK.  There are cables with color coding on the rectangular end.  A data/charging cable that is blue will insure you have a decent cable.  You can find some guidance at https://www.storagereview.com/news/what-is-usb-c-background-and-overview.  Note that cable manufacturers don't always color code.  Since you've started the process, I would let the upgrade complete.  In the future you might want to check your available PC ports.  Many PC's have multiple USB ports and they may vary in speed capability.  Another thing is do not go through any type of hub, directly plug into the port.

  • Thanks John, yeah I think I will just let it complete now, I suspect the 810 has a fairly old (slow) USB port, I've already replaced the battery in it, maybe time for an upgrade...

  • The Edge 810 came out in January 2013.  USB 3.0 came out in 2008 and USB 3.1 2013.  But as you suggested, that doesn't necessarily mean the Garmin device operates at the protocol speeds.
