Failure to install due to Visual C++ Redistributable mismatch

The installation of Garmin Express (7.13.1.0 downloaded from https://www.garmin.com/en-AU/software/express/windows/ on 31 July 2022) fails to install and reports: "Install failed. Garmin Express could not be installed on this computer. Try installing again."

This is due to the installer checking for / conflicting with a Visual C++ Redistributable, and failing to provide / include the correct version with the installer. Uninstallation of previously installed redistributables can get the installation to work, but of course this will break dependencies for other applications that purposefully installed these redistributables.

The only real fix here is for the Garmin Express installer to include the correct redistributable, install as needed, and correctly check for availability of the redistributable. If you *must* use it in the meantime, one way to do it is to create a VM for the singular purpose of running Garmin's software, to avoid conflicts with other applications - which is a pretty shameful state of affairs...

  • Since you do not specify the version of Windows and Visual C++ Redistibutable versions you are not likely to get much help from any other users here.

  • Garmin has outlined a remedy to this situation at https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=oYGyCdSQqs4ZXfk7kZDk36.  Note that there are two Visual C++ Redistributable packages to be installed.  There is also some advice at https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mac-windows-software/f/garmin-express-windows/267562/garmin-express-windows-11/1282755#1282755.  Even though it says Windows 11, it covers the Visual C++ packages that are needed by GE, even for Windows 10.

That's an interesting way to ask, I suppose.

    Windows 21H2 OS Build 19044.1826 (Window 10 Pro 64-bit).

And the redistributable that are required by Garmin Express 7.13.1.0, although the currently installed version that I'd like to upgrade is Garmin Express 7.11.0.0. Whenever I run it, it says it wants to install 7.11.1.0, which fails with the same error message as when I try to download and install 7.13.1.0.

The first linked post is not about this problem, but about the application failing to start (I'm asking about a failure to install/upgrade).

The second post is about problems when running the application - although it is indeed caused by Redistributable issues, it's also not the problem I'm having, as described in my question.

  • Thank you for the Windows version information.

I also asked about the Visual C++ Redistributable versions. What are installed, what need to be installed, and what other applications will this cause dependency conflicts with?

How are you finding out that it is Visual C++ Redistributable version problem? If it is from a log file can you post the exact wording of the error?

  • To see what versions you may already have installed, open Add and Remove Programs and look for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. The installed versions will be listed there.  Then compare the list against the Garmin recommended packages using the link I already supplied.  Note don't uninstall any of the versions that may appear not needed based on what Garmin requires.  They may be present for other apps.  I for instance have (6) version on my Win 10 Pro machine.
