Error loading newest maps that will not fit in internal memory

I have a Zumo 595LM which until this evening had the 2023.10 map set installed.

I kicked off garmin express and it warned that the new maps were too big for internal memory,

so it would load them the my installed SD Card. OK I have a 64Gb card which had plenty of room so I told it to go ahead.

I noticed that the new map set was 8Gb or so.

The process completed and I got this screen:

So what happened - did it error out or am I up to date? I'm confused.

Additional info:

Notice that only 1Gb of space is used on the SDCard?  I would have thought 8+ GB would be used?

MyMaps report 2023.20 is installed

Did Garmin Express somehow shoehorn them into the internal memory?

Thanks!

Jim

  • PS:  I do have the latest version of the Express s/w: V  7.13.1.0

  • 64Gb cards are not normally FAT32 by default which is why Garmin do not recommend cards larger than 32Gb. Either use a smaller card or reformat it FAT32. Note the latest maps are split into 2 files so myMaps may report an updated map but you may only have a part of the full map.

  • Thanks SUSSAMB!

When I bought the card a few years back the 64Gb card was only ... like $2bucks more ... so I was all like "sure WTHeck" ...

I   *DID* reformat it as FAT32 but ... now I don't know if I've accidentally shot myself in the foot or not.....

Plugging the card into my laptop it shows only about 1Gb of map image ...

Maybe I should go get a 32Gb card and re-install the update (after making sure it is formated to FAT32)?

    THANKS!

Sorry for slow reply ... I've been sick sick  :-/

  • Size does matter.  Get a card 32 GB or smaller and buy it from areputable source (not eBay).

  • Up until now ... bigger has always been has been better  ;-)  Dang!

I just dug thru the junk drawer and found a 16Gb card.

I'm running the long FAT32 format on it now (not the "quick")

Afterwards I'll install that and then try to re-install the 2023.20 mapset.... via Windows-Garmin-Express and see what happens!

I had some POI files on the old card ... now I'll have to find my  "POI-Loader" notes... sheez ...

Is nothing simple?   Stuck out tongue closed eyes

    THANKS Guys!

  • Just to close out this question/thread:

My old card was 64GB and formatted to FAT32, but apparently "size" was the issue...   Joy

All four maps are apparently now re-populated on the new config. of 8GB internal plus the downsized 16Gb SD card....

The SD card now has about 1.4Gb consumed which is more than the "old" config.

    Thanks guys!

    I appreciate you two!
