Garmin Express and windows 11 laggy performance.

On loading Garmin Express my computer becomes very laggy and unresponsive. It is a real pain as when I click on a window it takes a second to respond by which time I have second clicked and it disappears. This is especially noticeable using MS Edge browser
As soon as I shut down Garmin Express the computer becomes responsive again. It is quite a new computer so it is not a hardware issue.

Does anyone else have this problem?

  • Is this behavior with a device (like a GPS) also connected?  Or is it simply the PC, Edge open, and then you open GE?  How much RAM does your PC have?  There is also a GE setting, ""Always keep Garmin Express running in the background".  How do you have that set.  Having asked that, leaving it OFF should not be an issue in my experience.

Something to do might be to run the WIndows Compatibility Troubleshooter.  I'm not running Windows 11, but In Windows 10 find the executable; on my machine it is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Express and then right click the file, select Troubleshoot Compatibility.  Let WIndows chose what it feels is best.  On my machine I had issues with GE usually not even opening.  I would only get the splash screen for a few seconds.  Probably about 1 out of 5 attempts GE would remain open.  Windows Compatibility Troubleshooter chose to run the program as a Windows 8 and my issues disappeared.

  • It only happens when GE is open. I have unticked "Always keep GE running" and "Automatically launch GE" to see if that will help. GE never automatically started when I plugged my devices in anyway.

I don't have a problem when just connecting to a Garmin GPS and using Base Camp.

At times even my mouse would freeze.

    I have 16GB of ram.
In the past using windows 10 GE wouldn't start and I would have to restart my pc to get it to open.

  • I would do the Windows 11 Compatibility Troubleshooter.  In my 1st response I outlined how to do that in WIndows 10 and I would expect a similar process for Win 11.

  • Unticking "Always keep GE running" and "Automatically launch GE" seems to have done the trick.
    Thanks

  • Previously you said "I have unticked "Always keep GE running" and "Automatically launch GE" to see if that will help" and it apparently didn't.  Did you also do the compatibility check before finally unchecking the two options?
